Marked with 'Lanes' and Corps/Division Boundaries.The donor, Staff Sergeant R.O. (Bob) Snape, Reg No 8651, enlisted as a Stretcher Bearer in 1915 but, because of his secretarial skills was employed in HQ positions as soon as he arrived in France and as a stenographer who worked as Confidential Clerk to General Sir John Monash from June to December 1918; and subsequently, for General Sir Talbot Hobbs until June 1919. Warrnambool RSL Sub BranchCaptured German Postcard illustrating FRICOURT CHATEAU, in ruins. Bob and Harold worked together in 2nd DIV HQ, in the château's basement for several months, late 1916. Then, on a warm night in August 1918, Harold was mortally wounded (gassed) near here, in Fricourt Woods. The photo of German troops at Fricourt Château was apparently discovered in the château after it was retaken and occupied by the Australian 2nd Division. The German photo of troops armed with their stick grenades was possibly also collected by Bob at Fricourt Château

This collection of Bob Snape's diary and letters was transcribed because of the large body of material. 55 numbered letters (out of some 160 plus) survive. Many letters were typed. As a clerk in HQ, Bob had constant access to a type-writer, and sometimes said to his family that typing was much more efficient for him than writing by hand. There are many letters in hand-writing, some in ink , others in pencil. Some letters are on letter-headed paper, eg: YMCA, TSS (HMAT) 'Demosthenes', hotels, family in Wales.snape collection -

Bob Snape always included in his kit a few second hand Baedeker's guide books, as well as the 'Belgium and Holland' volume. Bob was a keen observer and commentator and used these guide books as any interested tourist. Bob's letters home often made reference to the history, culture and architecture of the countries he visited in the course of the war. Bob's English born father had lived and worked in France from 1878 to 1880 before his emigration to Australia.Two tone map in orange, grey and black. snape collection -

The Cook family was vitally important to the Snape boys who seem to have enjoyed a specially close relationship with Grandfather, 'Charlie Cook the Carpenter' and this largely female branch of the family many of whom lived nearby in Moonee Ponds when the boys were young. Charlie Cook was born at Blackheath in England. He voyaged to the USA to seek his fortune on the Californian goldfields. Hence, he was known as a 'Forty-niner". Albury Pottery was established in the late 1970s to supply pottery for the party plan company Cooperware, a spin-off from Faberware. Located in Hudson Crescent, Lavington, the pottery was managed by Rudolph Dybka until 1983, then by Ron Petch, who had previously worked as sales manager for Cooper Pottery, one of Cooperware's UK suppliers. By the mid-1980s, the pottery had four throwers and a further 5-6 employees, and was specialising in stoneware with distinctive ribbed forms and light blond glazes. In 1985, the pottery was sold to the NSW Government as a workers' cooperative, and Petch moved to Old Ballarat Pottery as production manager. In 1987, the Petch's bought back into the business with partners Pat and Ken Snape, moving to slip casting, doubling the operating area, opening a terracotta plant in a separate location and establishing a tourism presence in the Old Cheese factory between Albury and Wodonga. As the business grew it took on more partners and this proved problematic in a declining market for production pottery. The Petch's pulled out in 1991 and the pottery closed shortly afterwards. On the 4 August 1934, to mark the 20th anniversary of the Great Britain declaration of war on Germany, 106 trees were planted, during a ceremony, on the lawns of the newly created garden of the Shrine of Remembrance. The Shrine of Remembrance was built to provide a place to grieve and remember Victorians killed in the First World War (1914-18). Prince Henry, the Duke of Gloucester and son of King George V, officially opened the Shrine before a crowd of 300,000 people in November 1934. Captain Robert Sunter, commander of the coastal liner Manunda, Adelaide Steamship Company, was chosen to plant a Queensland kauri (tree - number 100) on the main avenue from Domain Rd leading to the Shrine of Remembrance. The photograph was published in the Herald (4 August 1934, p. 40). In the Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957), Friday 3 August 1934, page 8 In Memory of the Merchant Service- Captain Sunter to Plant Tree at the Shrine Tomorrow will be the 20th anniversary of Great Britain's declaration of war on Germany, and at 10 and. Captain R. Sunter, the commander of the coastal liner Manunda, will plant a tree in the Shrine! of Remembrance reserve In memory of the officers and men of the Australian merchant service who gave their lives during the war. The tree, , which will be No.100 in the reserve, will bear the following inscription based on the wording of the ' British Mercantile Marine memorial at Tower Hill. London: "1914-1918. In remembrance of the officers and men of the Australian Mercantile Marine who died for King and Country and have no grave but the sea. Planted August 4, 1934." During the war 12 ships of the Australian merchant service were sunk and 95 officers and men lost their lives.The Shrine of Remembrance committee recently asked the director of navigation (Captain J. K. Davis) to nominate a member of the mercantile marine to plant a tree in the reserve. Captain Davis passed on the request to the secretary of the Merchant Service Guild of Australia (Captain T. D. Snape) and, after having conferred with various sections of the sea-going service, Captain Snape announced yesterday that Captain Sunter had been chosen unanimously. Captain Sunter has a distinguished war record as commander of the hospital ship Wandilla. Born at South Shields, in England, in 1878, he is a son of the late Canon Sunter, of Adelaide. He served an apprenticeship in sailing ships, and soon after obtaining his master a certificate entered the service of the Adelaide Steamship Company, where he has remained. In the Wandilla during the war Captain Sunter became known to thousands of wounded soldiers and troops." Padre Frank Oliver of MtS can be seen assisting with dedication at far left. Captain Robert Sunter who also served in WW1, a friend of the seamen and the mission, died a month later in Cairns. A window funded by crew of the Manunda and friends was dedicated to his memory in St Peter's Chapel, MtSV in February 1936 by Padre Oliver. (see item 0038).Depicts one of the few memorials specifically commissioned for Merchant seamen of WW1 and in later years also a focus for those who died in WW2 and other conflicts. Perhaps much later in life, it was retracted and dismissed as "All rot!" in a hand-written, blue 'Censor's pencil-note across the typing. A second version suggests that the victims of the booby-trapped body were Belgian soldiers
This little piece of Allied Propaganda was written not long after the death of Bob's much loved brother and comrade. Perhaps it was composed in grief and bitterness, but later regretted and disowned, as not being worthy of himself.snape collection
