... 'Larundel No. 41 [Social Work Building School]'...Darebin Art Collection 7 Prospect Hill Dr Bundoora melbourne 'Larundel No. 41 [Social Work Building School]' Photograph George Mifsud ..."At the age of 20, I brought my first film camera, a solid, heavy and much loved Minolta XGM. Photographing mostly in black and white, I’ve been taking portraits, capturing landscapes and documenting people’s lives and rituals ever since. And now, more than 35 years later, I’m still excited to be on this journey with photography – alas, no longer with that Minolta. What attracts me to photography is the medium’s ability to show us the ordinary in an extraordinary way. My work has been acquired by the City of Darebin and the State Library of Victoria. I have been long and short listed for several major prizes, including the Moran Photography Award, the Head on Award and the National Photographic Portrait Prize." -

Rider Haggard (1856-1925), a British author, wrote fiction and non-fiction works and had letters and articles published in newspapers and journals. in 1895 he served on a government commission to examine Salvation Army labour colonies, which possibly influenced this book titled 'Regeneration'. The publisher firm, Longmans, Green & Co, was originally founded in 1724 in London by Thomas Longman under the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC.The book is also significant for its connection to the publisher Longmans, Green and Co., of London, a firm that has been established for over two centuries, renowned for publishing encyclopedias, dictionaries, books on English grammar, textbooks, poetry, reference books, novels, magazines and more. The book has additional importance for its connection to the Pattison Collection, which, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. The Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute’s publication collection is of both local and state significance.Regeneration: Being an Account of the Social Work of The Salvation Army in Great Britain Author: H Rider Haggard Publisher: Longmans, Green and Co Date: 1910 Red hardcover book with a gold embossed spine, an inscription on a sticker on the spine, and a pressed title on the cover. City of StonningtonEmily Floyd, Herrnhut Commune, 2012
... ...Social freedom...Work...Stonnington contemporary art collection Printmaking Lithograph Geometric Typography Emily Floyd Social freedom Work on paper Herrnhut Commune Herrnhut Commune Emily Floyd ...Herrnhutt Commune imagines a study group devoted to Australia’s first commune. Founded in 1852 and located near Hamilton in Victoria, the commune was run as an intentional community until the end of the nineteenth century. The orange and yellow graphic shows a woman harvesting carrots and pays homage to the daily communal practices of cultivating, preserving and cooking on the commune. Each of the four works comprising Emily Floyd’s suite of prints All Day Workshops is a proposal for a workshop exploring ideas of social freedom, co-operative learning and open communication. These large-scale posters combine stylised illustrations with the artist’s geometric typography. Each work in All Day Workshops extends Floyd’s investigation into learning and play as a form of expanded sculpture. In 2012, to celebrate the Australian Print Workshop 30th anniversary six Australian artists including Emily Floyd were commissioned to create a suite of works for a series of exhibitions under the title ‘Catalyst’. Floyd’s works are three colour plate lithographs, printed from three photo-litho plates. Printed at the Australian Print Workshop in an edition of 20 plus proofs in collaboration with APW Senior Printer Martin King and assisted by APW Trainee Printer Eliza Turnbull. stonnington contemporary art collection, printmaking, lithograph, geometric, typography, emily floyd, social freedom, work on paper, herrnhut commune -

Wodonga & District Historical Society IncDomestic object - Silver Filigree Thimble
... ...Womens social history...Women's work...Domestic items Filigree thimble Womens social history Women's work A silver thimble decorated with filigree work above a solid bottom section. ...This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Thimbles were used for both practical and decorative purposes and were created in a range of styles. Popular history also suggests that roots of the modern-day wedding ring in America had an interesting tie to a thimble. Puritans that colonized in early America did not believe in adornment. A common practice among these early Americans was for a man to present a thimble to his fiancée which was symbolic of his wish to marry her. These brides began to cut off the rim on these thimbles and making a simple band they would wear on their finger. Thus, the practice of wedding rings for women started. This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. It is also representative of a domestic item common in the 1930s.A silver thimble decorated with filigree work above a solid bottom section.domestic items, filigree thimble, womens social history, women's work -
