This wooden cardholder was made from the wood of the screw steamer S.S. Edina, most probably after she was broken up in 1957, but could have been made after one of several renovations during her lifetime. The slotted design of the cardholder allows a card to stand vertically, and the base is made wider to stabilise the holder. It could be used for holding items such as place cards, menus, and table numbers. ABOUT THE SS EDINA: - The three-masted, iron-hulled screw steamer SS Edina was built in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1854 by Barclay and Curle and launched on the Clyde on May 4th, 1854. The 322-ton, three-masted ship was 171 feet long, 23 feet 6 inches broad, and 12 feet 7 inches deep (52.12 L x 7.16 B x 3.84 D metres). The traditional figurehead of Edina, the ‘fair maid of Judea’, adorned its bow. The Edina later became famous worldwide for being the longest-serving screw steamer. (The term screw steamer comes from being driven by a single propeller, sometimes called a screw, driven by a steam engine.) During its long working life, SS Edina had its accommodation enlarged for war service, was completely overhauled and serviced several times; boilers were replaced, masts were reduced to one, and later added then reduced, a Poop Deck, Forecastle and additional accommodation were added, the hull was gutted completely, new decks and bulwarks, saloon was redecorated and upgraded, and several changes of commander. The busy vessel also survived several mishaps at sea. SS Edina’s interesting history includes English Channel runs, carrying stores and horses to the Black Sea in the Crimean War as HMS Edina 1864-55. The vessel then sailed to Europe and the UK before being sold and used for further service in 1861 as a blockade runner in the American Civil War. The vessel later served as a coastal trader in the western district of Victoria and Queensland, then carried gold, currency, and gold prospectors from Australia to New Zealand. SS Edina was an escort vessel to H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh during his visit to Australia in 1867. SOME EVENTS in the life of SS EDINA: - The SS Edina had voyaged to Australia under sail. Owners Leith, Hull & Hamburg Steam Packet Co. sold the SS Edina in March 1863 at Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne, to Stephen Henty of Portland, Victoria; Edina was perfect for working the West Coast cargo and passenger run between Melbourne and Portland, via the Port of Warrnambool, and Port Fairy. It first visited Warrnambool on April 4, 1863. SS Edina briefly worked the run from Australia to New Zealand, then returned to the West Coast run; the cargo included bales of wool produced in the western district of Victoria. In 1867-68, Stephen Henty sold SS Edina to the Warrnambool Steam Packet Company to continue trading along the coast of western Victoria. Captain John Thompson was the commander, and John Davies was the Chief Engineer. In 1870, SS Edina was in Lady Bay, Warrnambool, when a gale sprang up and caused a collision with the iron screw steamer SS Dandenong. SS Edina’s figurehead was broken into pieces and was never replaced. The Edina was refitted that year for use as a coastal trader in Queensland for a period, named R.M.S. Edina. It then went to Melbourne and carried cargo and passengers between there and Geelong from 1880 to 1938, with modifications in 1917; the ship was extensively overhauled, radically changing its appearance. It returned to having two masts, and the funnel, bridge, engines, and promenade deck were upgraded, and the saloon reupholstered. By 1924, Edina had made over 12,000 journeys, carrying over one million travellers between Melbourne and Geelong. In 1937, Australian Steamships Pty Ltd advertised in The Argus its Bay Excursions on the SS Edina from Portarlington and Geelong; it promoted, “Splendid Beaches, Excellent Bathing Facilities, and Light Refreshments available on board”. After several collisions, the SS Edina was taken out of service in 1938 and sold by its owner, Howard Smith Ltd., to a Williamstown shipbreaker, Mr George Burton. The Melbourne Harbour Trust permitted Burton to strip the hull and sell all parts at auction. The fittings were sold by auctioneers J.W. Styles & Son, c. 1938, on site at the Port of Melbourne and became widely dispersed. Victorian Lighterage Pty Ltd. purchased the hull, removed the engine and superstructure, and repurposed it as a ‘lighter’ named Dinah. It was loaded with wool and general cargo, then towed behind small tugs around the bay between Melbourne and Geelong. In 1957, after 104 years of activity, the SS Edina was broken up on the banks of the Maribyrnong River, Footscray, Melbourne, and used as landfill. A piece of the hull with Victorian Heritage significance is buried in the river. This card holder is made from wood from the SS Edina and is significant for its association with that vessel. The SS Edina is heritage listed on the Victorian Heritage Database VHR S199. She had endeared herself to the people of Port Phillip Bay as a passenger ferry, part of their history and culture. She played a significant role in the Crimean War, the American Civil War and the gold rush in New Zealand. She also served Western Victoria for many years in her cargo and passenger runs. The SS Edina is famous for being the longest-serving screw steamer in the world. After spending her first nine years overseas, she arrived in Melbourne, and her work included running the essential service of transporting cargo and passengers between Melbourne and the western Victoria ports of Warrnambool, Port Fairy and Portland. The SS Edina was purchased in the late 1860s by local Warrnambool business, the Warrnambool Steam Packet Co. and continued trading from there as part of the local business community. The SS Edina’s original ‘fair maid of Judea’ figurehead was broken to pieces in a collision with another vessel (the SS Dandenong) in a gale off Warrnambool, Victoria, in 1870. The maker of the ship model on the postcard was Dr C Nelson Longridge (1876–1952), an English surgeon, maritime author, and builder of detailed ship models. Other models include the SS Marioness and the steam yacht Asia. He also wrote the books 'Cutty Sark' and 'The Anatomy of Nelson's Ships'. The postcard was printed by B Matthews, Bradford, England, incorporated in 1970 as B. Matthews (Photo Printers) Limited. Collections of B Matthews' photo prints of famous painted portraits are held at The National Portrait Gallery of London. Copies of B Matthews postcards are today sought after by collectors. THE CUTTY SARK: - The Cutty Sark was built in Britain in 1869 and was one of the last great sailing ships. At first, it carried tea from China. Later, it was used to transport wool from Australia. It became famous for its speed and held the record for the fastest voyage from Australia to Britain for ten years. Later, a Portuguese company bought the ship and renamed it Ferreira. After that, a retired sea captain purchased it to use as a training ship in Cornwall. When the captain died, the ship was given to a training college in Greenwich in 1938. In 1954, it was placed in dry dock at Greenwich, where it remains on display. This postcard features a photograph of a model of the sailing ship Cutty Sark, making it significant because of its connection to this well-known vessel. The famous tea clipper transported wool from Australia to markets around the world. Models such as this one help us understand what sea travel was like before steam-powered ships became widespread, while also illustrating how trade, travel and migration developed over time. Cutty Sark was also celebrated for its speed. It broke records on the voyage from Australia to Britain and held this distinction for ten years. Its importance is still recognised today, as the ship has been carefully preserved and is now displayed at the British Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Its remarkable history has also made it a popular subject for model ship enthusiasts. The postcard is also valuable because it shows a model of Cutty Sark built by the renowned C. N. Longridge, who was not only a respected surgeon but also a skilled model maker and author of detailed maritime works. A further connection is found in the printer, B Matthews, who photographed and printed collections featuring famous people, model ships and maritime scenes, adding another layer of historical interest to the postcard. Postcard, black and white, showing a model of the sailing ship Cutty Sark. Printed details are provided on both the front and back of the postcard. Inscriptions include a brief description of the Cutty Sark, the location and maker of the model, and the printer's contact information. This print shows an image of the three-masted iron clipper Loch Vennachar. The ship was built by Thomson’s on the Clyde under the Glasgow Shipping Co in 1875 and named after a Scottish lake, as were other ships in the Loch Line’s fleet. Loch Vennachar made many journeys from Britain to Australia and was well-known in Australian ports. On one of its homeward-bound journeys from Australia, the ship sank in the River Thames. Its cargo included 850 tonnes of preserved canned rabbits from Warrnambool's Western Meat Preserving Company. The ship was raised and continued trading for another four years. On 14th June 1905, Loch Vennachar departed Glasgow for Adelaide and Melbourne. The last known sighting of it was on 6th September 1875 when overtaken by the SS Yongala; the captains exchanged the “all well” signals. After that, the ship disappeared with loss of all 27 lives, according to a list that was received by Fremantle through the English mail. The list indicated that there were no passengers on that voyage. Sadly, other Loch Line ships med with similar disasters. The list of lost crew on the Loch Vennachar included Thomas. W. Pearce, apprentice, Southampton. His father was Tom Pearce, one of the two survivors of the Loch Ard, wrecked in 1878. Also, Thomas’ grandfather, James Pearce, was the captain of SS Gothenburg at the time of her wrecking in 1875. Consequently, the wrecking of the Loch Vennachar and the Loc Sloy near the southwest point of Kangaroo Island, a lighthouse was erected, officially opening in June 1907. The northern headland of West Bay was named Vennachar Point in memory of the ship in 1908. The wreck was discovered in 1976 by divers from the Society for Underwater Historical Research, over seventy years after being lost off Kangaroo Island. The Loch Vennachar performed a significant role in Australia’s colonial trade, taking goods between Great Britain and Australia. This is a photographic image of the three-masted iron clipper Loch Vennachar created by photographer Fred Kruger of Geelong. Fred Kruger was born in Germany in 1831 and migrated to Victoria before his wife, who arrived in 1863. He began working in photography in the 1850s. He was internationally recognised for his work, which covered a variety of subjects. He settled in Geelong in later years, registering his studio in Skene St, Newtown. He passed away in February 1888. The National Gallery of Victoria now holds much of his work. The wreck was discovered in 1976 by divers from the Society for Underwater Historical Research, over seventy years after being lost off Kangaroo Island. The Loch Vennachar performed a significant role in Australia’s colonial trade, taking goods between Great Britain and Australia. These goods included locally preserved tinned rabbits processed at a factory in Warrnambool for overseas trade.Print of painting clipper ship Loch Vennachar. This oil painting, mounted in a handmade, carved frame, was originally held in the old Warrnambool Museum and Art Gallery, which was established in the 1880s. A note from the curator of the gallery accompanied the painting: The S.S. "Warrnambool”, 2833 tons. The oil painting by C.K. Miller of Glasgow of the above steamer named after this town was presented to the Town Council of Warrnambool by Mr William Lund Of London, the owner of the “Lund Line” of steam vessels, in recognition of the ladies of Warrnambool having presented the ship with a ‘home flag’ the pattern of which is seen upon the funnel in the painting as also upon the flag at the mast-head. The flags flying at the foremast are the ship’s “number” M.R.V.B. The presentation of the flag and album both took place in Melbourne on December 1st, 1982. On the 6th December, the “Warrnambool” lay-to off this port – on the homeward passage via Adelaide for a short time – see W.S. Dec 7th. The painting depicts the sail and steam-powered ship, S.S. Warrnambool, built in 1892, during the transition period when ship designs shifted from clipper ships with their billowing sails to steam-powered ships that moved at a greater pace. The flag flown from the stern signifies the British Merchant Navy that traded around the world to transport cargo, and later passengers, from one destination to another. During its lifetime, the S.S. Warrnambool underwent several modifications, upgrades and changes in its design. The painting was attributed to the ship portrait painter, the renowned C.K.M. - Charles Keith Miller. At some point, it was catalogued with the date 1883. However, the correct date is 1892. The artist's name and date are covered by the repaired frame, but are verified on the transfer document between the Warrnambool Art Gallery and Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. In 1966, between the closure of the old Warrnambool Museum and Art Gallery and the distribution of the painting to Flagstaff Hill, this painting was repaired by David Heysen, son of the German-born artist Hans Heysen OBE. David was born in Hahndorf (called Ambleside for a short period), South Australia, married Lyly Refshauge from Melbourne, and they raised a family on their property in Kalangadoo, near Penola, in South Australia. The painting is of importance to the Warrnambool community, reflecting the excitement of having a ship named after the town. So much so that the ladies made a unique flag in its honour and presented it to the ship's owner when it docked in Membourne. The painting is significant for its handmade, ornately carved frame, joined by a craftsman. It is an example of craft and joinery created in the late 19th century. The artist has depicted the image of a historical sail-and-steam ship of the type in which cargo was traded across the world, including to and from Australia. It is a transitional time between sail and steam, helping to interpret the evolution of power used to move ships. Vessels such as this also brought migrants to Australia.Painting, oil on board, of the screw steamer SS Warrnambool, by artist C.K.M. dated 1892. The painting is mounted in a hand-carved wooden frame with a floral and geometric pattern, and the inner border is painted gold. It depicts a two-masted sail and steam ship, sails raised, and a black funnel emitting smoke. Hull is black with a white horizontal stripe and white trim around the sides of the deck. Three lifeboats are visible. The clipper shape bow appears to have a figurehead. A red ensign flag flies at the stern, and a blue and red flag is attached to the mainmast. The frame has been assembled using Mortice and Tenon joints, one of which is exposed on the back, lower right corner. A chandelier chain has been attached for hanging. The signature, date and title are no longer visible, perhaps due to the The backboard has empty holes around the edge and is held in place by staples. The visible surface has remnants of adhesive from two rectangular attachments. There are two small white stickers attached, one with a handwritten inscription. There are pencil and pen inscriptions. The painting is protected by cardboard with inscriptions made with a marking pen. (A note from the old Warrnambool Museum and Art Gallery accompanied the painting.)On the backboard, written in the style used by the Warrnambool Museum and Art Gallery: - On white sticker, in pen “A-P31/1-74” - Pencil “A27/1883 / Artist CKM 1883 / Title SS Warrnambool / oil on board” Written in pen by the repairer: - “Repaired & re-drilled – cleaned etc. / David Heysen 11/66” Written by Flagstaff Hill’s Cataloguer in pencil: “3031” On a cardboard wrapper, in a marking pen: - “S.S. Menus used on P&O liners SS Himalaya and SS Arcadia 1955-56. After the Great war of 1914-18, Australia experienced what up until then had been its biggest surge in immigration from Europe. Australia was seen as the great land of opportunity and became one of the top places to migrate to, particularly from Britain. The increase in migration to Australia led Britain’s leading shipping line to the Far East, the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O;), to invest in a fleet of new ships of around 20,000 tonnes each to handle the business coming their way.29 Cruise Ship Menus from P&O cruises 1955-56Peninsula & Oriental Steam Navigation Companycruise liners, migrants, menus, p&o
