"The foundation stone was laid on Wednesday, 21st June, 1905, before a large number of parishioners and visitors by Mrs T H Armstrong, wife of the Bishop of Wangaratta; Royston Ready presenting Mrs Armstrong with a silver trowel as a momento of the occasion." From - The Parish of St Stephen, Rutherglen 1863-1963. The Rector at this time was Rev A J E Harris-Rivett. St Stephens Rectory, High Street, Rutherglen. Mrs Armstrong, wife of the first Bishop laid the stone.
