This photograph is one of a series taken by Allan while travelling through France in mid-1946. It was taken in the medieval city of Rouen, a city heavily damaged by the Allied bombings during the Battle of Normandy in May 1944 and shows a cob house, typical of the period. Original building was established by Whyke's family Grocery, built in 1860s. Stripped to apricot brickwork. Verandah removed. Situated East Side of Warrenheip St between Eyre St and Forest St, Buninyong. Building much altered and used as a restaurant in 1970s. Fell into disrepair. Revival took place but not restoration. 1990s under threat of demolition if not conforming to council safety requirements. Building has since been renovated as a pizza restaurant (2023). In 1977 a group of Mount Beauty cross country skiers formed the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club. In 1979, a version of the famous Birkebeiner race, the first Australian Birkebeiner was held at Falls Creek. In June 1990 representatives from Australia put their case for a southern hemisphere race in the series. Following a trial event in 1990. Australia became the 12th member of Worldloppet in the winter of 1991, with the first Kangaroo Hoppet. In 1991 a parade and commemorative torch lighting ceremony were organised in Mt Beauty as part of the celebrations to mark the first official Kangaroo Hoppett with participation from local community groups and commercial organisations, the Chamber of Commerce, local government representatives and individuals.Kangaroo Hoppet caters to diverse interests by offering a 42km and 21km event. It also offers a 7km event that attracts skiers, ranging from elite juniors to parents, grandparents, babies and first time skiers. It is recognised on the world cross country ski race calendar. It brings large numbers of participants and spectators to the area which support tourism, local businesses and employment. This collection of photographs shows various scenes around Warrnambool and district such as street scapes, the Ozone Coffee Palace, Botanic Gardens, Beach scenes, Hopkins River and Proudfoots on the Hopkins. Valentines snapshots were done of many place world wide, and packaged in a convenient size to be posted.These cards have an historic and artistic significance and also provide the opportunity to be used in an interpretive way. The three brick shops were part of the later commercial development which emerged along O'Shanassy Street. These shops were built on the northern side of Brook Street. Each postcard folder in this set has no address, message or postage stamp. Postcard folders such as these were popular as holiday souvenirs in the early to mid-20th century and were kept in good condition by collectors. The size is convenient for posting to friends and relatives and packing as holiday luggage. Postcards in the early-to-mid-19th century were an inexpensive way to remember and share holiday scenes, as few people could afford a camera and the price of developing the photographs. The images on these postcards were produced from black and white lithographs of photographs taken at Warrnambool and the surrounding district during the early to mid-20th century. Publishing firms such as Melbourne-based Valentine and Rose purchased photographs from local photographers and reproduced them for sale. This set of postcard folders shows that more than one publishing company had access to the same or almost the same images. The photographs include street scapes, the Warrnambool Breakwater and Pier, Botanical Gardens, beach scenes, cliff formations, the Hopkins River, municipal buildings, the Post Office and the Soldiers’ Memorial. The postcard folders in this set of three are significant as a record of local history from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. The locations of the images match photographs and postcards in our collection that were taken at different times and provide a historical record of the Warrnambool and southwest Victorian locations, growth and changes.. The images record changes in the coastline, land, bay, buildings and other structures, roads, transportation and even the fashions of the times. The images were produced from lithographs of the original photographs and are printed on both sides of long strips of white photographic paper that are Z-folded into covers of textured card. Some of the images are repeated in all three folders. Folder 8665.1 - the cream-coloured folder was produced by The Valentine Publishing Co. Pty. Ltd. Melbourne and contains 15 photographs, some of which are also in the blue and the green folders. Folders 8665.2, the green folder, and 8665.3, the blue folder, were published by Rose Stereograph Co, Armadale, Vic. This is a photograph of an engraving showing the first train arriving at the Echuca Wharf on 25/09/1865. The photograph appeared in the Illustrated Australian News on 25/09/1865. It also appeared in Susan Preiestly's book, 'Echuca; A centenary history' in 1965 on page 46.. The picture is of interest because it shows the size of the wharf in 1865. It also shows all the crowds to welcome the first train. It also shows the buildings along Murray Esplanade. In the far left the Steam Packet Hotel, Shackell's Bond Store and the St George's Hall, next the The Bridge Hotel. Five large steam ships are visible, all carrying crowds of people. In the foreground is the S.S Melbourne. Two rowing boats are in the left foreground.This engraving is significant because it shows the welcoming of the first train onto the wharf. The photograph shows the size of the wharf in 1865, as well as the street scape and the vessels on the water at the wharf. There is also some activity at Evan's sawmill. There are crowds on the wharf, and lining Murray Esplanade. It also shows that most of the crowd are males, which helped describe the role that women played in public life in the 1880's.
