Joachim Streger was born in Wedel, Germany, in 1827 and came to Australia in 1855. After landing in Adelaide he travelled cross-country to Bendigo. He was robbed of everything when he was held up by bushrangers at Big Hill. Following this he was supported by his friends, the Kahlands, who had arrived in Bendigo two years before from the same German village. He set up puddling machines in King Street, Garsed St.,Myrtle St and Quarry Hill. He also became a carpenter and builder. He later married Anna Kahland in 1878 following her husband's death in 1876.Copy of photograph of Joachim Carl Friedrick Streger.
