Sunbury Bush Fire Brigade was established in Evans Street in a small wooden building near the Post Office in 1910 and adjacent to the former recreation reserve. It was later moved to the opposite side of the street, near the former Collins Bookshop. In latter years two depots were built out of the immediate shopping area in Jackson Street, opposite the Ball Court and at the intersection of Elizabeth Drive and Gap Road. The parade took place in Sunbury in 1919 and was held to welcome home the local returned soldiers, who had enlisted in World War 1. In the photograph the parade is approaching the intersection at Evans and Macedon Streets. Sunbury's Shopping complex now occupies the vacant land in the background, although for many years that land was the main sports ground. The building in the distance was the Sunbury Fire Brigade.Many Sunbury men enlisted to fight in World War 1. The people photographed were attending a ball in Sunbury organised by the local Firemen to raise funds for the local fire service. It took place on the 26th August 1936 in the Sunbury Memorial Hall (formerly Mechanics Institute) in Stawell Street.Local fund raising social functions like balls were well supported on country towns across the country and were a way of raising the necessary money for the organisations to keep functioning.
