Sunbury Rail Crossing Metro Train Service Sunbury A coloured photograph of weatherboard building with a red corrugated roof of a railway station along with the platform and some of the rail tracks and overhead wires. ...Renovations and extensions were carried out at Sunbury Railway Station from 2010 to 2012 accommodate the electrification of the rail service from Watergardens to Sunbury. The grey buildings adjacent to the wooden building are the extensions on Platform 1. Both Platforms 1 and 2 were raised and extended to accommodate the electric trains. The old building on Platform 2 was replaced with a newer one. The smaller wooden bridge linking the two platforms was replaced with a higher one which had ramps as well as stairs. In November 2012, electric trains began terminating at Sunbury.Prior to 201to commute to and from Melbourne, Sunbury residents relied on steam trains which commenced in 1859. It was in Station Street. In the distance the Sunbury Asylum hill is on the LHS. The men are from the Diggers Rest railway gang. Standing in the immediate front is Jim Brain and front left is Malic Cahill, seated is the ganger, Clary Grimmet, 3rd from right is Phil O'Conner, son of Frank and 5th from left is Mick Frouly. Sunbury Shopping Square were constructed on the railway land on the east side of the line in 1989, but before the Safeway-Woolworths complex was built in 2000 on the west side of the railway line. The goods train was being pulled by the green locomotive, which was used to take the Jubilee train throughout Victoria in 1951, to acknowledge 125 of European settlement in Victoria, ran into the back of another stationary goods train on the rail line. The guard, A.C Read, in the stationary goods train was killed. P J Mcwhirter, the guard in the other train was injured. The tree lined street in the background is Horne Street.This smash was one of a number that have happened along the Sunbury rail line and in the vicinity of Sunbury Station over the years.A black and white photograph with a white border of a train smash which wrecked a steam engine and carriages. The rail service runs from the river town of Echuca and then on to Bendigo and Melbourne.
