This items were collected after the official opening of the Sunshine Market Place on the 11th October 1998. The market place was developed by Centro Properties Group. The former Massey Ferguson site became a contentious issue for the City of Sunshine from the mid 1980's. The Council had acquired the land from Massey Ferguson and were considering developing the land into a large shopping complex. After complex discussions between developers, the site owners, councillors, consultants, legal advice and with the Victorian Government, the Council was forced to sell the site to private developers. The Victorian State Government stepped in and prevented the City of Sunshine in becoming the developers of the site due to the possible exposure to large amounts of financial debts. In the end, Sunshine ended up with two distinct shopping complexes, the Sunshine Plaza on the east side of Hampshire Road, which is also on former Massey Ferguson land, and the Sunshine Market Place, on the west side of Hampshire Road, the large site of the former Massey Ferguson manufacturing site. The Millennium Man was a large metal sculpture commissioned by Village Cinemas Sunshine in the 1990s. Created by BIGFish in Footscray, he was designed as a playful, larger‑than‑life movie mascot. He was a muscular figure holding a globe wrapped in a strip of film, symbolising movies around the world The sculpture and was built from metal, with a bold, comic‑book aesthetic and was only intended originally to last only five years, but he became a local icon instead. The Sunshine Marketplace redevelopment in 2016 included a significant refurbishment of Millennium Man but by 2020, he had deteriorated badly with rust and structural issues, and the fact that people loved climbing on him made him a public liability. The Millennium Man was removed sometime after 2020 and has not returned to the site. The wooden buildings of Sunshine Railway Station were demolished as part of the Region Railway Line works that created additional and longer platforms, pedestrian overpass with lifts for disability access. The City of Brimbank Sunshine Branch Library and Customer Service Centre was built on the former H.V. McKay Massey Ferguson Site. H.V. McKay’s Advertising Signs H.V. McKay’s advertising signs were more than just promotional tools—they were visual emblems of industrial pride and rural transformation. His company, famous for the Sunshine Harvester, used signage to reinforce the brand’s identity across Australia and beyond. Characteristics of H.V. McKay Advertising Signs • Brand Name “Sunshine”: This was McKay’s flagship brand, stamped on everything from machinery to buildings. The name itself evoked optimism, productivity, and Australian ingenuity. • Bold Typography: Many signs featured large, serif lettering with high contrast, often in red, yellow, or black colors associated with vitality and visibility in rural landscapes. • Imagery of Machinery: Some signs depicted the Sunshine Harvester or other agricultural implements, emphasizing innovation and reliability. • Materials: Signs were typically made of enamel, tin, or painted wood. Enamel signs were especially durable and popular for outdoor use. • Placement: Signs appeared on factory walls, railway sidings, rural supply stores, and even on the sides of barns and sheds across farming regions. Sunshine’s Historical Context • The H.V. McKay Pty Ltd, commonly referred to as the Sunshine Harvester Works, in Braybrook Junction (later renamed Sunshine) was located on this site. The factory became a hub of local industrial activity, and signage played a key role in branding the town itself. • By the 1920s, the H.V. McKay Harvester Factory had become the largest manufacturing enterprise in the Southern Hemisphere. • The Sunshine Harvester Works employed thousands of people from both Sunshine and the surrounding suburbs. • In 1930, the company merged with the Australian arm of the Canadian manufacturer Massey Harris, forming H.V. McKay Massey Harris Pty Ltd. • In 1953, Massey-Harris merges with Harry Ferguson Ltd, forming Massey-Harris-Ferguson Ltd and in 1958 renamed to Massey Ferguson Ltd • The Massey Ferguson Factory closed in the 1980’s and the demolition of the site started in 1988. • The site today is the home of the Sunshine Market Place, Brimbank Council Offices, Visy Cares Hub, Sunshine Police Station, Sunshine Magistrates' Court and a number of other shops and offices. • The only building remaining of the original factory is the Bulk Store, now the Visy Cares Hub. The Sunshine and District Historical Society Pioneers’ Lunch / Dinner is an annual event. It’s a commemorative gathering that honours the early settlers, people, community leaders of Sunshine and the surrounding district, events, achievements, etc. At the Pioneers’ Lunch / Dinner, a toast is a ritual and a dedicated moment to honour the original settlers and their contributions, and a guest speaker talks about an interesting subject. Guest speaker Charles Fahey taught in the History Program at La Trobe University until his retirement in 2018. Ernest, Alfred, and Otto Wunderlich founded the Wunderlich company in Sydney in 1885. The company expanded into Melbourne with a showroom located in Queen Street, Melbourne. The North Sunshine factory on McIntyre Road opened in 1927 producing glazed terracotta tiles, faience cladding, and later asbestos‑based products including Durabestos sheets and pipes. In 1969, CSR purchased Wunderlich. In 1977 CSR sold the Sunshine site to James Hardie. The factory closed down in 1983. The site was then redeveloped into the Westend Market Hotel and Dan Murphy’s. In the mid‑2010s, a cluster of mesothelioma cases among North Sunshine residents was linked to historical asbestos exposure from the factory.The Sunshine Wunderlich factory was one of Melbourne’s major interwar industrial employers. It contributed to Sunshine’s identity as a manufacturing hub alongside the H.V. McKay / Massey Ferguson Sunshine Harvester Works. This small book records only a very small number of employees who worked at the factory. In the Sunshine Advocate of 21/03/1925 it is reported that Wunderlich Ltd decided to establish works in Sunshine for the manufacture of terra cotta and faience for the facing of city buildings. The product was intended to imitate granite, which would give a brighter appearance to concrete walls. A stone surface finish to the terra cotta could be achieved by applying a variety of colour combinations of glazes with a special 'spackle' gun. A building that is still standing and has the imitation granite finish terra cotta is the Nicholas Building at 21 - 47 Swanston Street, Melbourne. The Nicholas Building was designed by Harry Norris for Alfred Nicholas (Aspro fame), and was built during 1925 - 1926. The building is classified by the National Trust (B4079) and has the Victorian Heritage Register (H2119). During my employment in the factory from 1964 to 1969 the tiles were generally faced with single colour glazes. For some small jobs a light coloured mottled finish was achieved by spattering a white glaze over a cream coloured background or vice versa. There were no imitation granite jobs done, probably because of changing attitudes to the intended appearance of buildings. The green coloured tile in our collection is an unfinished (untrimmed) retain tile typical of the green coloured tiles that were made for the two stages of the Commonwealth Centre Building (colloquially known as the Green Latrine), that was once located on the corner of Spring and Victoria Streets in Melbourne. Similar coloured tiles were also used on some shop fronts. The Commonwealth Centre Building no longer exists, however the Century Building at 125 - 133 Swanston Street, Melbourne is covered with single coloured tiles (white). The Century Building was built in 1939, with the architect being Marcus Barlow. The Building is classified by the National Trust (B4045). Our tile along with several others were headed for dumping among the asbestos waste at the rear of the two Wunderlich factories (Circa 1968). With permission from the Factory Superintendent of the Terra Cotta factory they were saved and taken home. Several are still in use as pavers around a barbecue in Melton from where our tile was obtained. It should be noted that the Wunderlich Architectural Terra Cotta factory in Sunshine did not manufacture terra cotta roofing tiles, as reported in the Brimbank City Council Post-contact Heritage Study HO 073 former Wunderlich now West End Market. Wunderlich terra cotta roofing tiles were manufactured at their factory in Mitcham Road, Vermont. Document HO 073 contains at least 3 errors. This tile is an example of the type of facing that was applied to city buildings for over 40 years from the mid 1920's. As building techniques changed the need for this type of facing diminished, and so the factory was eventually sold and demolished. A free standing tall chimney stack which serviced two of the kilns was a significant feature of the North Sunshine skyline. A part of the history of Sunshine disappeared with the demolition of the factory and the chimney stack. Only the façade of the finishing section of the factory where tiles were trimmed and stored remains.
