The Sunshine rail disaster occurred on 20 April 1908 at the junction at Sunshine railway station (in Sunshine, Victoria, Australia) when a Melbourne-bound train from Bendigo collided with the rear of a train from Ballarat. 44 people were killed and over 400 injured, almost all of them from the Ballarat train, as the Bendigo train was cushioned by its two locomotives.Sunshine Railway Disaster Tom Rigg MS Word Files TR 28/2/08sunshine railway disaster, tom rigg

Sunshine had traditional railway gates on Hampshire Road for decades and as traffic increased and Sunshine grew into a major industrial hub, the crossing became a bottleneck. In 1961, the Hampshire Road overpass opened, taking road traffic over the rail line and pedestrians using an underpass. With the bridge and underpass in place, the old railway gates were removed the same year.sunshine railway station, hampshire road, sunshine, sunshine post office, cinderella gardens

The North Western Program Alliance (NWPA) is one of the major delivery alliances within Victoria’s Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP). Formed as a long‑term partnership, the alliance is responsible for removing dangerous level crossings, constructing new stations, upgrading rail infrastructure, and delivering precinct improvements across Melbourne’s north‑west. A portion of the NWPA team is currently based at the former Sunshine Ten Pin Bowling Alley, located at 505 Ballarat Road, Sunshine. From this site they have established the NWPA Walking Group, which undertakes weekly walks through Sunshine. These walks have been hosted by Alan Dash of the Sunshine and District History Society, who has been sharing detailed insights into the history of Sunshine and its surrounding neighbourhoods. NWPA has begun producing an internal newsletter that highlights the historical sites visited during these walks and showcases the local heritage stories being uncovered.Walking Group Visits Another Iconic Melbourne Lanewaymcdonald lane, sunshine

The Sunshine Railway Disaster was a catastrophic rear‑end collision at Sunshine Station on 20 April 1908, killing 44 people and injuring more than 400, the worst rail accident in Victoria’s history. The official inquiry found the Bendigo train passed a signal at danger, likely due to brake failure, and could not stop in time. This accident led to major reforms in Victorian railway safety, including: - Stronger steel‑framed carriages. - Improved braking systems. - Better signalling and traffic control. - The disaster remains a defining moment in Sunshine’s early 20th‑century history.
