These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1991, were published as part of the newspaper’s ongoing column profiling local traders across the district. These photographs feature owner for the various shops located at the St. East Shopping Centre, Main Road East Corner McArthur Avenue, St. Albans. The Sunshine Advocate’s feature on local traders was a modest yet well‑liked column that played a meaningful role in strengthening community identity. Through these regular profiles, the newspaper promoted local businesses and helped shape Sunshine’s understanding of its developing commercial district. Strip shopping centres hold heritage value as essential components of suburban development from the mid‑20th century onward. They supported migrant settlement, local entrepreneurship, and neighbourhood cohesion, offering affordable retail spaces for family‑run businesses. Their role as informal social hubs fostered community interaction, cultural visibility, and walkable neighbourhoods. Despite economic and demographic change, many strip centres remain resilient landmarks that preserve collective memory and contribute to the identity of Victorian suburbs.7472.01 - Drava Continental Butcher Shop Main Road East Cnr McArthur Avenue St. Albans 1991 Photographs (Advocate 485.1).JPG Lewis & Emily Hojnik and Tony & Carol Hojnik 7472.02 - Drava Continental Butcher Shop Main Road East Cnr McArthur Avenue St. Albans 1991 Photographs (Advocate 485.1).JPG Lewis & Emily Hojnik and Tony & Carol Hojnik 7472.03 - Drava Continental Butcher Shop Main Road East Cnr McArthur Avenue St. Albans 1991 Photographs (Advocate 485.1).JPG Lewis & Emily Hojnik and Tony & Carol Hojnik 7472.04 - Swiss Meats Main Road East Cnr McArthur Avenue St. Albans 1991 Photographs (Advocate 485.1).JPG Paul & Karoline Berger 7472.05 - Milk Bar Shop Main Road East Cnr McArthur Avenue St. Albans 1991 Photographs (Advocate 485.1).JPG Albert Sawan 7472.06 - Milk Bar Shop Main Road East Cnr McArthur Avenue St. Albans 1991 Photographs (Advocate 485.1).JPG Albert Sawanmain road east, mcarthur avenue, st. albans, drava continental butcher shop, swiss meats
