Following World War One, the present Memorial Gates at the front of the Lara Recreation Reserve (opposite the service station), were erected and the names of 104 men and woman who enlisted from Lara Districts were added. Twenty four paid the supreme sacrifice. They were erected at a cost of £380 by Barklamb Brothers of Caulfield. His Excellency The Governor Lord Somers officially opened the gates on 22 December 1929. John Hitchen was the manager of the first Cheltenham Post Office that opened 1/8/1857 in a boot and shoe store. Mail was transported to and from St Kilda to Cheltenham by coach 6 days a week and an additional service twice weekly to Tootgarook via Frankston also by coach. 1868 Post office Savings Bank began operation and the Telegraph office was established at the Railway Station 1885. A new building was built 1891 in Point Nepean Road for the official Cheltenham Post Office and a new manual telephone exchange began 1899 with 24 subscribers. By 1909 100 subscribers, 1951 there were 1700 and in 1974 12,000 subscribers . Hence this new building was designed by Oscar A. T. Gimsey & Assoc. and built by T W Morris & Sons Mordialloc. The work was installed at the cnr of Bridgport St and the Midland Hwy, adjacent to the Daylesford Library, in 1999. The work was commissioned by the Friends of the Library, Daylesford and funded by Arts Victoria and the Australia Council. Poemscape: a physical anthology is a much loved site specific installation work commissioned by the Friends of the Library, funded by Arts Victoria and the Australia Council, made by Daylesford resident Patrick Jones in response to his interests in the provision of public food, the development of locavore sensibilities and the rethinking of economies of material accountability and regard. Patrick Jones is a poet and non-fiction writer, a visual artist and ecological thinker. In 2013 Patrick Jones was awarded the degree of Doctor in Creative Arts from the University of Western Sydney for his thesis, 'Walking for food. Regaining permapoesis.'Public Art Environmental installation work installed near the Daylesford Library. Poemscape: a physical anthology comprises of 19 apple trees (18 Fuji apple trees and 1 Granny Smith apple tree) planted on the corner of Bridgport St and the Midland Hwy, adjacent to the library. Adjacent to each tree is a hardwood plinth at topped with a laser engraved brass plate that has been screwed in place. Samson for an invitation to be included with the local scout groups in functions to welcome Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh to Bendigo on Friday, the 5th of March 1954. Australian rules football began being played on a regular basis in Cheltenham in 1890. Teams would not only play locally but travel by train fairly long distances, such as to Ballarat, for the day, play a game, turn around and come home. The Cheltenham home games were played on a paddock on the corner of Park and Charman roads in Cheltenham. In 1907 the Cheltenham progress committee made an application to the board of land works for land in Weatherall Road for recreational service to the public. That application was received and granted, then developed where Cheltenham Recreational Reserve now stands. The ground was opened in 1909 and the first Cheltenham side entered in the newly formed Federal Football League along with seven other foundation members, Mordialloc, Mentone, Moorabbin, Frankston, Glenhuntly, Elsternwick, and Ellindale. The grand final for that year, 1909 was a hard encounter between Cheltenham and Ellindale with Cheltenham coming out victors, thus becoming the inaugural Federal Football League premiers. The Federal Football League (FFL), also known simply as the Federal League, was an Australian rules football competition in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria. The competition was in existence from 1909 to 1981 and was regarded as one of the strongest metropolitan leagues in Melbourne.Black and white image of the players and officials of the Cheltenham Football Club. A party of surveyors camped by Yuille's Swamp (later Lake Wendouree) and surveyed the countryside for a map to be produced by the Geological Survey of Victoria. In November 2004 the Central Highlands Regional Library presented a special edition of 200 copies of the 1861 map reproduced from a copy in their collection. The City of Melbourne issued a License or Licence for Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co (MTOCo) drivers (gripmen) or conductors under their Hackney Carriage by-law No. 110. The cost was 5/- or five schillings. This practice ceased during 1917. 1 - License No. 179, was issued to George A Barrett of Port Melbourne who was a tram conductor on the 16/1/1914. This pulpit fall commemorates the second Wesleyan church structure that was brought to Mount Pleasant from Clayton's Hill and erected at the corner of Morton and Tress Streets. It was about 30 feet long, 18 feet wide with slab sides and a canvas roof. The Rev Theophilus Taylor was one of the first preachers to conduct services in this church. It was the second church on the site, the first being a canvas tent erected in 1854. In 1857 a third, wooden, church was built with side buttresses and was later enlarged by transepts on each side. The Rev. Albert Briggs was the minister at Mt Pleasant in 1955. [Source: Peers, T.
