Fan-tailed Cuckoos are found throughout eastern and south-western Australia. They are also sometimes found in nearby small island nations as far as New Caledonia. Their call is a distinct, descending trill, which they are known to make even outside their breeding season. The neck is thin compared to a typical Fan-tailed Cuckoo - potentially a taxidermy error or damage. Otherwise, the specimen is reasonably representative. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. This fan-tailed cuckoo has a dark grey/brown back and a pale rufous (a yellowy brown) underside. The tail is also brown with white spots on some of the feather tips. The front of the face is pale rufous and blends into the black at the top of the head and neck. Some of the feathers around the neck are grey. There is a patch of white on halfway down the body on the left wing. The eyes are brown, the feet are yellow, and the beak, which is missing at the bottom, is yellow. The bird stands on a brown, wooden perch with a circular bar, curved stand, and circular base. It has an identification tag tied around its right leg. The white-throated Needletail is a migratory bird, breeding in Central Asia and southern Siberia, and wintering south in the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia and Australia. This large swift is often mistaken in flight for a small predatory bird, but its long curved wings and white markings help to identify it. Needle-tailed Swifts get their name from the spined end of their tail, which is not forked as it is in the more common Swifts of the genus Apus. They build their nests in rock crevices in cliffs or hollow trees. These birds do not like to sit on the ground, spending spend most of their time in the air. The White-Throated Needletail is a highly sociable bird commonly seen in large flocks containing a hundred plus birds. This species is also known to mingle with birds of different species. They have a distinctive white throat and undertail. This species is mainly airborne, however they are known to reside in trees when on land. They can mainly be spotted along the north and east parts of Australia. This species is listed as vulnerable and threatened in the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland and Victoria. Since this is a taxidermy mount, it is not an accurate depiction of the White-Throated Needletail. The species should have a predominantly grey-brown plumage, with the exception of the throat and undertail which are white. There should also be a green tint to the species feathers. A large ethnic group in the Bendigo area was the Chinese, numbering 400-500 in 1868. There were several large Chinese villages in the Bendigo district of which one was located in Long Gully, near the junction with Sparrowhawk Gully. It was Sir John Quick, former resident of Ironbark, who introduced the first bill into Parliament in 1888 for the disenfranchisement of Chinese holding a Miner’s Right. Chinese miners worked the tailing heaps and discarded ore bodies. It was only the Chinese contractors, who worked the tailings of the quartz reefs. The work of stacking tailing dumps associated with major mine sites was a particular feature of the Bendigo field. The tailings had to be stacked for placement as they washed out of the batteries. It was undertaken exclusively by groups of Chinese workers, who paid the mining companies to stack the tailings with the hope of finding traces of gold. The long sluicing boxes and blankets laid out in lines over the tailings became a familiar feature in the city landscape. It was an essential element of the operations of the mines. The tailings were progressively planted with spiny rushes, pampas grass and peppercorn trees."On the tail end" written by James A. Lerk. Defending The Chase by Marcel Cameron; November 16, 1994, Issue 167, News Retrieved from https://www.greenleft.org.au/1994/167/news/defending-chase "In August 1990, a grassroots campaign to halt clearing of bush at The Chase began after access roads encroached on the nesting habitat of Melbourne's last family of wedge-tailed eagles. Three on-site demonstrations were each attended by up to 200 people and attracted widespread media coverage. Young people played an active role in the campaign, including people from Environmental Youth Alliance, Children for Conservation and local school students. In December 1990, Eltham Shire Council voted to acquire 12 hectares of The Chase for a wildlife reserve; the developers received a compensation package which included $125,000 and the right to sell two extra allotments."Colour photograph of a baby wedge-tail eagle on the nest at 'The Chase', Warrandyte.wildlife, eagle, warrandyte, the chase.

Old Ballarat Pottery was set up by John Gilbert as part of the Old Ballarat Village, opposite Sovereign Hill. Gilbert had lectured at Ballarat College of Advanced Education before establishing the Edinburgh Pottery at Sovereign Hill in 1972 to enable visitors to see traditional trades at work. The Old Ballarat Pottery was a much larger concern, producing wares for sale through department stores and on party plan via Faberware as well as through the village. Early works looked as though they might have been made in the 1850s, with unturned bases, crude marks and dark treacle-like glazes. Peter Pilven, one of Gilbert's students, worked there after graduating from the Ballarat College of Advanced Education, teaching throwing to students like the potter John Ferguson, who was there from 1978-79. Potters were initially employed by Gilbert's company Pontresina Pty Ltd, registered in 1973. (The Old Ballarat Pottery was registered as a company from 1984-1994.) Early works are marked with an impressed long-tailed 'B', or an 'OB' on either side of a mine tower. A printed stamp also features a mine tower surrounded by the text 'Old Ballarat Pottery Made in Australia'. Later work is impressed 'Stoneware Old Ballarat Pottery Australia' with a kangaroo.Hand thrown black glazed bottle with lip.
