Shaun Tan is best known for his illustrated books and short films that deal with social, political and historical subjects through dream-like imagery and fantastic creatures. In addition to his book and film work, Tan is a respected and prolific painter. Tan’s paintings capture a sense of place and atmosphere, even when the specific location is not made explicit. Tan says of his practice: “Often I don’t know why I need to paint a certain scene, only that I do, as if to stop it from drifting away too quickly, to just allow a little more time to think about it. Or to just say ‘I saw this’”.

In addition to his book and film work, Tan is a respected and prolific painter. Octopus 2 is one of three paintings of Anstey Station, which is next to Tan’s art studio. Nearby, there is an octopus painted on the roller door of a bait shop. Tan observes that the octopus is usually only visible at night, and then not very well: "It is an eerie vision, a bit comical too. There is something about the tucked-away grouping of high and low walls, the amber light and the jumble of signage that I find very evocative, as if there is some spirit being tucked up in this unlooked-at pocket of the rail-line”.

A relic of the battlefield, the Long Tan bayonet was collected on 19/08/1966 by 2nd Lt D R Sabben. He later presented it to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Masonic Lodge ( No. 921) at the South Eastern Masonic Centre in Keysborough, Victoria (now defunct) after they requested an artefact from the battle. In 2001, the SLR bayonet was mounted into a stone ashlar (cube) in the memory of National Serviceman Lt Gordon Sharp of 6th Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR) who died in the Battle of Long Tan, 18th August 1966, along with 17 other young Australian soldiers. The artefact was used in Masonic ceremonies held on Vietnam Veterans Day (August 18th) from 2001 until 2024, when it was presented to the National Vietnam Veterans Museum.White marble cube with bayonet in its scabbard fixed into the top of it. Photograph AWM Bel 69/556VN.The Long Tan Cross is a memorial which was erected by the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment on 18 August 1969 to mark the site of the Battle of Long Tan, which was fought three years earlier during the Vietnam War. While the cross was removed following the Communist victory in 1975 and used to commemorate a priest, it was recovered by the Đồng Nai Province Museum in 1984 and placed on display. A replica cross was also erected on the battlefield during the 1980s, and is frequently visited by Australian Vietnam War veterans.
