He was founder and managing director of Tassell United Cannery, Pty., Ltd. For many years Mr. Glassop was associated with Messrs. R. W. Thurlow and Co., Ltd., Brisbane, and later left this firm to open his own business on the Darling Downs. He later returned to Brisbane to enter the manufacturing business. This vintage smoking cap was worn by William Hall of Newport, an early farmer in the area to the east of Newport station. Smoking caps are typically soft flat topped hats, cylindrical or fez shaped, designed for indoor leisure time. They kept gentleman’s heads warm and stopped pipe and cigar smoke from clinging to their hair. The hats were often elaborately embroidered. They were made of soft materials like velvet, silk or brocade. They usually featured intricate beadwork, or gold thread embroidery and were often topped with a silk or gold tassel. Clothing. Pink silk satin drawstring bag, with a sheer pink organza overlay. A 1 cm wide silk ''drawstring'' passes through eight 1.3 cm diameter plastic rings, sewn inside the bag, 4.5 cm from the top, creating a 4.5 cm frill when closed. The top edge of this frill, is decorated with cm long glass beads and tiny round glass beads. The lower edge of the bag is gathered in tightly, and a silk tassell, decorated at the head, with tiny red, dark and light blue, and white beads. The tassell falls from a thread covered cone shape, 2.3 cm long, and decorated with yellow, red, blue and white beads. Object. Blue, damask weave fabric sash, 240 ms long(including fringing) woven with a rose design, and with a .8 cm wide white satin-finish stripe, just inside the side edges. A gold type metallic fringing, 5 cms deep, finishes each end. A woven panel just off centre of the sash, includes eleven figures, including children, three shields, a globe hand and heart. Radiating from the words- FRIENDSHIP LOVE AND TRUTH is an eye like shape, radiating light. At the lower edge of the panel, woven into the fabric are the words, MANCHESTER UNITY of the INDEPENDENT ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS. Above the woven panel is an ornate metal star, 10 cm x 10 cm, with eight points, and made from silver metal sequins and coiled wirework. Centre of the star is padded to a height of 1 cm, covered in satin, sequins and wirework in a circular shape. A 7 cm long metal tassell hangs from the lower edge of star. Clothing. Woman's black ribbed silk bodice, fully ;lined with black cotton fabric. High round neckline with stand up lined lace collar (4cm), fastened left of centre at front with two metal hooks and eyes. Front lining fastened with twelve metal hooks and eyes from throat to waistband. Waistband (5.5cm) of horizontal pleated fabric. Small pocket (8cm X 6cm) attached to inside lining on LHS. Waistband has 7 cm cross over tab section at centre front fastened with three metal hooks and eyes. Centre front opening is edged with black lace and tucked spotted voile, fastened with three metal hooks and eyes.A wide shawl collar across the shoulders extends and gathers into the waistband at front and back. This forms a V shaped opening at the front exposing the lace and voile beneath.The inner and outer edges of the collars have decorative knots. The centre of the collars have 18cm pin tucks from the shoulder seam at the front and 11 cm pin tucks at the back.At centre back. a panel of black lace runs from the collar to the hem of the waistband. Two gathered fabric tails are attached at centre back to hang below the hem of the waistband. Decorative lace as stitched across the shawl collar at the shoulders seams, ending with a decorative knot and cotton tassell (7cm). Set in Leg 'o'Mutton sleeves are gathered around the arm holes and gathered into a band of fabric with decorative lace and knots. The narrow lower section has a turned over hem edged with decorative knots and black lace. Each sleeve has a 5cm slit at the wrist. The bodice has fifteen bone casings spaced across the garment, from the waistband. These are stitched in place with yellow cotton. Some internal seams finished with yellow cotton. Hand stitched.
