‘In the Tracks of Hercules’ was a multi-media visual and performing arts event in London in December 2005, transforming this ancient hero into a spiritual trail-blazer for our time. The Lucis Trust, London, as part of its educational outreach sponsored this exhibition at the Wathen Hall and Lennox Gallery. The Lucis Trust is an educational charity which promotes an understanding of spiritual values and principles and works towards right human relationships. Alice Bailey in her book ‘The Labours of Hercules’ an astrological interpretation, links Hercules’ journey through the labours, with the twelve signs of the zodiac. The guidelines of the exhibition called for works of art, music, poetry, dance and prose that would encapsulate the great leap of imagination that Hercules faced at each stage of his journey to reach the highest expression of who he was. At the start of his journey through the twelve labours, the ancient story tells us “Minerva handed him a robe, woven by herself, a robe that fitted well, of beauty rare and fine. He put it on with triumph and with pride, exalting in his youth, he had to prove himself” (The Labours of Hercules, by A Bailey). The robe impressed upon him a sense of vocation. Our group, the Aquarian Esoteric Group, was studying Baily’s book early in 2005 and with so much creative ability in our group, my vision was to blend our many talents and create ‘Minerva’s Robe’. The Lucis Trust accepted our suggestion for the robe as an entry to the exhibition and the enthusiasm, creativity and joy that followed amazed us all. Inspired at each stage by one of us, with particular skills needed, knitting, felting, beading, dressmaking and copper engraving. It truly became the 13th labour of love! The robe was exhibited in the foyer at the performing arts and then at the visual arts exhibition. Now it has returned to Melbourne we feel it’s journey should continue as a gift to the National Wool Museum, Geelong, for future exhibitions we hope it will inspire the spirit of group endeavour to continue in our country and in the world. We believe in this lies the vision for humanity. - Anne Heywood, on behalf of the Aquarian Esoteric Group 'Minerva's Robe' is a large hand knitted and felted garment decorated with beads, yarn twists and copper discs. Patsy Coverdale wrote on about the artwork which is found with the bedspread "This trousseau bedspread commemorates a century of our daily living, of four generations, a bedcover where many loves and lives have begun and ended. Once immaculate, its years of service, of blood, sweat and tears, have seen so many building washes that today's embroideries would shrink from. I rescued it, patched its tears and wears with needlework from ancestors and aunties to celebrate the International year of Women in 1975. It symbols include the IYW to the left, women's work and its rhythms and cycles, a pearl button for our pleasure centre. The male phallic symbol illustrates the organ's early development and its natural power with the energy of relativity behind it all."A quilt made for the centenary of the Hospital made for the International year of women 1975. In this nest of bunnies fashioned from gloves, it’s as if Hannah Gartside has bundled the world’s most tender feelings and given them aesthetic form through droopy ears, leather pot bellies, sweetly curved behinds, comically suggestive poses. Through Bunnies in Love, Lust and Longing, Gartside has taken second-hand leather gloves from the 1950s and 60s, some as early as the 1910s, and curved these once-worn textiles over steel armature, bending animal pelt into warm, playful, living beings. This tabard is one of a small number that were produced/woven by Japanese master weaver Jun Tomita during the period that he was resident artisan at the Jam Factory in Adelaide. The tabard incorporates Ikat/Kasuri woven central panels. Tomita was born in 1951 in Toyama prefecture, and is based in Kyoto, the textile centre of Japan. The technique he uses kasuri (the Japanese term for ikat) is selectively pre-dying yarns before weaving to create pattern. The other decorative features of this garment are based on Japanese family crest designs (kamon). The pointed shoulders of this garment are reminiscent of the stiffened shoulders of kataginu, the upper part of the kamishimo ensemble that was formal wear for samurai men. Tomita was at the Jam factory from 1976-78 and he has works in numerous public collections, including: - Stanthorpe Art Museum, Art Gallery of South Australia / Australia - Oslo National Gallery / Norway - National Museum of Israel / Israel - Stedelik Museum, Museum of Rotterdam / The Netherlands - Denver Art Museum, St. Louis Art Museum, Long House Foundation - Cooper-Hewitt Museum of Art/USA - Victoria and Albert Museum, UK - Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art, Japan The donor purchased this tabard from an exhibition held at Wool House in Parkville Victoria, which was sponsored by the Australian Wool Board to promote the use of Australian Wool in textiles and fashion at that time, around April/May in 1977. At that time (1976-1977) the donor owned and run a retail/display shop for craft products such as ceramics, artworks and jewellery. The donor subsequently retained this in storage with some other items since the business closed.Double sided reversible tabard featuring woven centrals panels. I see my work with textiles as always a negotiation of both the poetic and the political. A medium often relegated to the realm of ‘craft’, I see working with wool as a subtly subversive methodology, and an opportunity to engage in socio-political critique. As a laborious yet cathartic craft, the delicately feminine familiarity and domestic warmth of my hand-sewn tapestries allows me to open up and question traditional notions of masculinity through the enactment of a highly personalized queer ritual. Furthermore, wool carries with it frontier pastoral associations of early colonial expansion, and it is in this context that the work Map, which is based on the ethnographic mapping of indigenous language groups, was envisioned.contemporaryWangaratta Art Gallery Collection. The Artist in Residence program enabled research of the Museum's collection of artefacts relating to 11th Battalion AIF. Access was provided to the behind the scenes storerooms of uniforms, banners, photographs, artefacts and diaries. Michele summarised her experience with the project as follows: "It was an interesting experience and a topic I would not probably have considered had I not been asked. The mixture of history and the people who lived through these times has been an absorbing and rewarding journey for my art practice."Mixed media / textile art from Department of Culture and the Arts, Artist in Residence program 2015 by Michele Eastwood. The hand knitted sleeveless jumper in the Museum, made by Sergeant John Ellwood Rudd of the 48th Battalion was the inspiration behind this work. With great ingenuity John Rudd unwound the knitted socks sent by the women back home. Creating knitting needles fashioned from the barbed wire surrounding the POW camp he was incarcerated in, he knitted a jumper to help him through the freezing winters of Germany in the First World War. Original artefact was inspiration for this artistic interpretation.
