More than 1000 women veterans of World War II were welcomed by the Prime Minister in the Great Hall of Parliament House. Among them was Rita Kneebone, who had served with the Voluntary Aid Detachments (VAD) on Labuan Island, Borneo. Also among them was Jean Syres and Mary Canty, who between them, served with the VAD in Palestine, Syria, Egypt and Papua New Guinea. Giving the address on behalf of all female veterans was May Douglas, the only surviving director of women's army services, served in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
