Wreath laying ceremony for Legacy widows at the Cenotaph at the Shrine of Remembrance. This is an annual event for Legacy widows at the start of Legacy Week, which is the first week in September. The photos show President David Ford carrying a wreath to be laid in the Garden Courtyard. The plants in the Garden Courtyard have been selected because they are native to the Mediterranean countries in which Australians have served. The olive tree planted by Legacy in 1972 was relocated to the new courtyard as part of the Shrine redevelopment. It stands as a centrepiece, representing peace. This is the olive tree of peace that was planted by Legacy in 1973 to mark their golden jubilee. It was relocated to the new courtyard in 2002 when the Shrine was being redeveloped. The scene on the postcard depicts the Spanish courtyard (or Cloisters) as a space within the Mission to Seafarers Melbourne. The view to the courtyard is from the Celia Little Room. The Spanish mission design was inspired by a need to make the 1917 Mission complex at Flinders st extension distinctive and easily found. The photograph is of the open courtyard of the Monastery of Panagia Kathariotissa which is situated on the south-eastern peak of Homeric Mt. Niritos at approx 600 metres above sea level on the Greek island of Ithaca. Panagia Kathariotissa is the patron saint of the island. The monastery is a place of great spiritual significance for the people of Ithaca. The children from Bulla Primary School visited Glengala Primary School near Sunshine in March 1993. During their visit they joined in a number of activities with the Glengala children. In this photograph they were practicing soft ball skills in the covered courtyard area. Glengala school was one of the newer schools built in the Western suburbs in the late 1980s-early 1990s. Federation University Australia was established on 1 January 2014. Formerly known as the University of Ballarat, its enabling legislation was the University of Ballarat Amendment (Federation University Australia) Act 2013. On 1 January 2014, the University of Ballarat amalgamated with the Monash University Gippsland Campus to form Federation University Australia. The Gippsland Campus also had a long lineage dating back to 1928 with the establishment of the Yallourn Technical School which became a predecessor institution to the Gippsland College of Advanced Education formed in 1968. This photograph is representative of the relationship between the Mission to Seafarers Victoria and the Anglican Church. The image also historically depicts the courtyard at the Mission to Seafarers Victoria from approximately the early 1950s.Reverend Frank Oliver served as Chaplain at the Mission to Seafarers Victoria for almost thirty years. The photograph shows the historical ties between the Mission and the Anglican Church towards the end of Oliver's chaplaincy in the 1950s. A photo of country Junior Legatees that had come to Melbourne for a camp in January 1961 on an outing at Como House. The girls came from all over Victoria and stayed for two weeks at Blamey House in Kew. Names provided with the photo: L-R Carol Farnham, Helen Rogers and Caroline Blackwell. At the time Legatee Bert Davis was CFO and his daughter Louise was asked to help with the running of the camp. In January 1929, two parties were organised in the honour of the Wellers as they left Melbourne. Reverend Weller had been appointed assistant superintendent to the headquarters of the Missions to Seamen in London. They boarded the Osterley on the 22 January. Unfortunately Mrs Weller died in 1934. Many ladies on the photograph are yet to be identified. Following a Royal Commission in 1854, the building of a new Asylum at Kew began in 1864. It was built to replace the Yarra Bend Asylum on the Fairfield side of the Yarra River. Work started in 1864 and was completed in 1872 at a cost of ₤198,334. Operating over a period of 116 years, and often renamed to take account of public sensitivities, the ‘Kew Lunatic Asylum’ was one of the largest asylums built in Australia. ‘Willsmere’ was finally closed in December 1988 and sold by the Government of Victoria in the late 1980s.A rare and historically significant photograph of female staff of the Kew Hospital for the Insane, in front of the central wing. The photograph is one of a pair donated to the Kew Historical Society by Frances Dorothea Van Brummelen (1931-2011) in 1994. Following her graduation as a social worker, Fran Van Brummelen joined the staff of Kew Cottages in 1969, and became senior social worker there in 1971. She remained at the cottages until she retired in 1994. Earlier, In 1987, with psychiatrist Cliff Judge, she founded the Kew Cottages Historical Society becoming its president. In 2002, the pair collaborated on the book Kew Cottages: the World of Dolly Stainer, which was later commended in the Victorian Community History Awards. This photograph shows one of the many weddings held at the Mission to Seafarers over the years and provides an overview of wedding fashion of the late 1920s. The Bride is posing in the courtyard of the Mission to Seamen. The bridesmaids were Ella Kendall and Molly Walker. The Walkers and Dora had a long association with the Mission and the LHLG and in the 1960s becoming president of the Flying Angel League which amalgamated with the LHLG in the early 1960s. In 1970 Dora received an OBE. Private images of the day for the record were supplied to the Mission by sons David and Brian in 2018. The article in the Herald of the day describes the event: "WEDDING AT SEAMEN'S CHAPEL Reception at Hotel Windsor The pretty little chapel at the Sea men's Institute was packed with interested friends this afternoon, when Miss Dora Walker, one of the Mission's most enthusiastic and efficient voluntary helpers, chose it as the setting for her marriage with Mr H. P. Simpson, son of Mr and Mrs J. H. Simpson, of Mornington. A group of her fellow workers decorated the chapel with lovely pink and white gladioli, carnations and roses. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. J. R. Weller, chaplain of the Mission, and the bride was given away by her father, Mr A. W. Walker, of Manning road, East Malvern. She wore a lovely ivory georgette frock, the finely tucked skirt being fashioned with a deep transparent hem of Chantilly lace. Over it fell a beautiful Honiton lace veil mounted on tulle and arranged to give the ef fect of a train. Fragrant white roses composed her bouquet. Two attendants followed her down the aisle — her sister, Miss Molly Walker, and Miss Ella Kendall — both wearing dainty shrimp pink georgette frocks and large crinoline straw hats in the same shade with a dainty edging of tulle. They carried bouquets of pink cactus dahlias nnd delphiniums. Mr Louis Buscombe was best man, and Mr George Thompson grooms man. After the ceremony Mr and Mrs Walker entertained about 50 guests at the Hotel Windsor."This photograph shows one of the many weddings performed at the Mission to Seafarers chapel over the years.
