58th/32nd Battalion (The Melbourne Rifles) 1948-1955 was an Infantry Battalion from Melbourne Australia. It became the 58th/32nd Battalion (The City of Essendon Regiment) 1955-1960 before becoming part of the Royal Victoria Regiment in 1960 and today its customs and traditions are preserved by the 5th/6th Battalion, the Royal Victoria Regiment. Before 1948 it had been two separate regiments; the 58th Infantry Battalion (The Essendon Rifles) and the 32nd Infantry Battalion (The Footscray Regiment). Peaked Blues Cap from the 58th/32nd Battalion (The Melbourne Rifles) 1948-1955 fitted with the gilt brass badge of the regiment. Excavating prior to the building of Melbourne Benevolent Society in Cheltenham. The Centre had begun life in 1850 in Melbourne, as the Victoria Benevolent Asylum to "relieve the aged, infirm, disabled and destitute poor of all creeds and nations and to minister to them the comfort of religion" It outgrew its North Melbourne premises so was located to a new site at Warrigal Road, Cheltenham. The foundation stone was laid in 1909, and the main buildings were completed in 1911. In 1970 the benevolent Asylum was re-named Kingston Centre. The photograph is black and white. The image shows the Drum Major of the 6th Battalion, the Royal Melbourne Regiment between 1936-1960. He wears the uniform of the regiment which is similar to that of the Royal Fusiliers, with whom the 6th Battalion was affiliated. The Royal Melbourne Regiment was amalgamated into the Royal Victoria Regiment in 1960. RP5/6-00811-1 is the original coloured photograph printed on card (now fragile). Joan Richard was a speaker at the Surrey Hills Historical Society meeting in November 2013. A watercolourist, she has been a long standing member of MSWPS, Past and Recent President in 2017 and a Life Member. The Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors was founded in 1902 by women who had been students at the Art School of the National Gallery of Victoria, to provide a forum for artistic discussion and an opportunity to view and comment on each other's work. Originally named the Students' Art Club, it became "Woomballana" (meaning either 'everlasting beauty' or 'search for beauty') Art Club, The Women's Art Club, the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and finally, in 1954, the present title was adopted. The history of the MSWPS and its members’ achievements, issues of the workplace, family and art commitments, the economic survival of artists, migrant artists and prejudice against women are also explored. Much of the information in “More Than Just Gumtrees” has not been available in previous publications; it includes hitherto unpublished sources - oral history interviews, minute books, reviews, letters, early photographs. This letter is in response to Robin Boyd's announcement that he will resign from the Melbourne Beefsteak Club. A formal letter from Boyd is requested immediately, so another member can be elected. A copy of Victorian Children's Council Basic Book List and two leaflets were enclosed with this letter - not found in Boyd's papers.On the reverse side, Robin Boyd has drafted a reply to the sender (Frank) in pencil. This explains the reason for Boyd's resignation - competing work and family life pressure on friday evenings, making it impossible to attend monthly dinners consistently.

The Melbourne Beefsteak Club, Australia’s oldest food society, was founded in May 1886. Members were from business, professional and academic circles. The Club had some arcane rituals, with Masters and Writers of the Records. This letter from The Recorder is addressed to Brother Boyd and includes a list of 26 members and lists of past Writers of the Records and Masters from 1964-1966, and list of Writers of the Records and Masters for the next two years 1967-1968.
