After his mother dies, Marco, a gifted violinist, has to make his own way in the world, eventually setting out to find the sister who left with the gypsy band. Along the way he's helped by a series of kind people, and the book follows his growth from a homeless, penniless boy into a young man who repays the kindness shown to him. The plot follows Margaret Kendall, a young girl who was lost as a small child and spent four years living in the harsh, impoverished city slums. The story opens as Margaret is reunited with her wealthy mother at their country estate, "Five Oaks." While she is overjoyed to be back in a loving, comfortable home, Margaret struggles with severe culture shock and guilt. She cannot forget the suffering street children and impoverished friends she left behind in the slums.
