A collection of 3 photographs with a page of notes on the West family. Solomon West and his brother John became pioneer settlers on Phillip Island. Solomon married Elizabeth Bryant in 1857 at St Andres Church of England, Brighton. Elizabeth died in 1895 on Phillip island and is buried in the Phillip Island cemetery. Archie was the son of William and Jane West who died tragically in the Bendigo rail yards at the age of 21. Jane was buried in the same grave in Bendigo. Nellie, William and Jane's 2nd child married Harry Alexander Brown and are buried in the same grave together with Nellie's father, William West.355-01: Coloured photograph of the grave and headston of Solomon West in the Bendigo Cemetry. 355-02: Coloured photograph of the headstone of Archie S. The first kiln built on Phillip Island in the 1870's for Mr John West. It was situated in Thompson Avenue next to Wests General Store. When the kiln was demolished, the bricks were used to build the old Post Office on the corner of the Esplanade. Mr John West gave a Banquet at the Isle of Wight Hotel to celebrate the opening of his kiln.Water Colour Sketch. This picture was reconstructed by Jean Archibald from pencil sketches by S Serpell in 1905, and an artist who travelled to Phillip Island with the "Vagabond", a journalist for the "Leader", in 1889. This land was owned by the McRae family, whose wife was a Justice. Hence the street names of McRae and Justice. The weatherboard family home [ originally a guest house called Glen Isle] was at the end of the current Justice Road. The estate was created in the mid 1960s. The house was put on skids and dragged by two tractors and a bulldozer to 364 Church Street while the family home was built at 368 Church Street, Cowes.[ Source Sandra Rocotas, nee McCrae.
