An ultrasonic torch sends out a high frequency beam that bounces off items in it's path and sends back signals to an ear piece worn by the user. A change in sound indicates the nearness of an object, and it was (at the time) thought to be a possible replacement for white canes in the future. The flame travelled by air to Australia, with stopovers along the way in Istanbul, Basra, Karachi, Calcutta, Bangkok, Singapore, Jakarta arriving in Darwin on 6th November 1956. The flame was the transported by Royal Australian Air Force jet omber to Cairns. The first Australian Torchbearer was Con Verevis, of Greek-born parents, followed by indigenous athlete Anthony Mark.
