Photograph shows two maximum traction bogie cars with one drop end, numbered 22 and 23 on Balaclava Road at St Kilda Town Hall. Both cars are full and travelling in different directions and both carry an additional destination board reading "Esplanade". Along side one tram are a dozen men, women and children riding bicyles or in a passing motor car. Three uniformed tramwaymen are also shown. The Balaclava Road/Carlisle Street line opened in 1913 and was very busy in summer months and on weekends enabling residents in Melbourne's eastern and southern suburbs to travel directly to St Kilda Beach without having to change to cable trams. Trams 22 and 23 were part of a four car set, built for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust in 1912 in Adelaide and based on a designed used there. They were sold to the Hawthorn Tramways Trust in 1916, eventually classified as O class then sold back to Adelaide in 1927. Their bulky design earned them the names 'Zepplin' and 'Dreadnought'. Photograph shows W2 class cars 480 and 633 turning into and from Queens Way at the relatively new St Kilda Road tramway junction opened in 1968. The build up of dust on the concrete and the head and tail sidelights on the trams (installed in the early 1970s) suggest a date of mid 1970s. Both trams have weather blinds down and destinations read Malvern Burke Rd route 5 and City route 64. Photo, from The Age used in item 7194 reporting on the closure of the St Kilda - Brighton tramway from Elwood depot to Middle Brighton on 1/7/1957. Photo shows Victorian Railways tram No. 35 at St Kilda Railway station with the privately operated bus behind. The service was operated by the Eastern Suburbs Omnibus Service using some half-cab buses. The bus is a Leyland OPS4 built in 1950 and subsequently sold to Eastern Suburbs Omnibus service in 1957.
