Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) , was a descendant of one of the earliest settler families in Kew. Employed at the Kew Asylum as a 'public servant', he was a skilled amateur photographer, photographing numerous scenes in Kew and on his travels around Victoria. The majority of his photographs date from 1916 to 1929. His finest photographs are housed in two photograph albums. Digital copy of a photograph from page 32 of the 47-page photograph album containing 261 gelatinous silver images, loaned by Diane Washfold with permission given to digitise and hold a copy in our collection. John Chapman has written in 'Bushwalking Clubs - A Brief History', about the establishment in Victoria of the first bushwalking club in 1888, and the popularisation of bushwalking during the interwar period. Henry Christian's 'walks' appear to have been undertaken solely or with a companion/s. This black and white photo is part of a group of photos taken in the Victorian High Country. The page is labelled 'Near Glen Wills & Lightning Ridge" and includes photos of bush tracks, family groups, and natural features. The photograph is from the album of Ivy Child and shows a scene from Lyrebird gully that runs alongside the Olinda Falls. This has been a popular tourist area from the 1900s onwards. Ivy May Child (1910 – 1989) was the daughter of Arthur Edward (Ted) Child (1878 – 1964) and Ethel May Madden (1888 – 1970). Ted Child was the son of Matthew Francis Child (1839 – 1933) and Martha Jeeves (1857 – 1926). He was the grandson of one of the early pioneers Francis Child. Ivy grew up on the family property on Childs Road and took many photographs. Most of these are glued into her photo album. The album covered the years from c1927 – 1932. Ivy married Henry William Burgess (1906 – 1968) in 1944. The photographs remain in their original state in the album with individual copies made. The Dorey Family ran The Hospice from 1908 - 1911. The Hospice burned down in 1924. The reverse of the postcard contains a small section of a letter that must be continued elsewhere. This walking track links the Steavenson River and the Taggerty Rivers and is a step back in time to Marysville's historic logging past. Sections of this mostly flat circuit follow old tramline alignments, which in places reveal the original timber sleepers on which the big logs were transported to the nearby sawmill. Mt Calvin, the homestead of Jeanie and Willie Richardson can be clearly seen in the clearing above the men in the picture. The white roof of the Barber homestead is on the right of the picture. A landslide in 1934 destroyed the tree ferned area. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas.Black and white photograph that is a copy of a Rose series postcard titled 'The Picturesque Road to Mt.
