The Illustrated Australian News is a former monthly news magazine of record in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Its precursor Illustrated Australian News for Home Readers was first published in 1837 by Ebenezer Syme and David Syme. The title was later changed to The Illustrated Australian News and Musical Times and finally shortened to The Illustrated Australian News from no. 233 (Jan. 26, 1876) through to the final edition, no. 408 (May 1, 1889).Copy of an article in The Illustrated Australian News about a visit from Melbourne to Phillip Island. The holiday started from the Albion Hotel at 7.00am by coach - assumeably horse drawn!. The Cairn was erected to commemmorate this by the Victorian Farmer's Union. The Minister of Agriculture The Hon. G. L. Chandler CMG. Tool - wedge
An agricultural tool used by loggers, or farmers, the log splitting wedge has been used for thousands of years and was originally made from stone. They were either driven straight into the wood or into a previously made incision with the blade parallel to the grain. Using a sledgehammer or other tool hammered onto the flat end, the wedge is forced deeper into the log until the force splits the timber.Used by the donor in clearing timber at Olinda and Shady Creek, Victoria. Family heirloom. Originated in County Tyrone in Northern Ireland. Came to Tasmania with the family of Thomas Johnstone, a blacksmith. He was not happy there and with the help of Joshua Black came to Portland, Victoria, opened a blacksmith business in the town and then took up a section at Swan Lake near Portland.No Churchill Island significance - suits the period of Amess HouseMantel clock placed traditionally above the fireplace.
