1863 was the last steam locomotive built by Hudswell Clarke for the Colonial Sugar Refining Co (CSR). A colour photograph of Cooks Mill in Victoria. Located in the Cathedral Range State Park near Marysville, Cooks Mill was established as Cathedral Mill in 1938. Processing Mountain Ash and Manna Gum, it was a major local employer before ceasing operations in 1955. Early settlers initially used the harsh, rocky country of the Cathedral Range for grazing. However, wild dogs and difficult terrain eventually ended this. In 1938, timber workers established the Cathedral Mill near the junction of Little River and Storm Creek. The mill was later renamed Cooks Mill and supported local milling operations through the 1940s and 1950s, supplying sawn timber to the Healesville railway station and Melbourne builders. SS Edina was a screw steamer build by Barclay and Curle, Glasgow Scotland in 1854. Her active service included the North Sea trade, ‘Crimean War’, ‘American Civil War’, Victoria’s west coast run, New Zealand to Melbourne trade, Queensland coastal trade, and of course, the Port Phillip Bay runs between the years 1880 to 1938. IN 1873, she underwent a significant renovation which included adding covered deck seating. This seat probably originates from that time. ‘SS’ being an abbreviation for ‘Screw Steamer’ signifying that she was propelled bya steam engine rotating a single propeller, or ‘screw’ as it was know at the time.The SS Edina was an iconic and affectionately regarded part of Port Phillips maritime history and culture. It is historically significant for being internationally famous as the worlds oldest working screw steamship between 1912 and 1938. Its career was varied and interesting and it is considered significant for its involvement in the Crimean War, US Civil War, NZ gold rushes, and locally for its career as a western district steamship and Bay steamer. When Edina was retired in 1938 it as the world's oldest working steamer. Had travelled more than 1 million km. Was finally broken up by George Seelf on the banks of the Maribyrnong in 1957. The first company to make a success of hard-rock (quartz) gold mining at Black Hill was the Black Hill Company, formed in 1859. Mining from the open-cut mine probably commenced in 1860 and by 1861 the company had erected the largest stamping mill in Victoria. The mill ran 24 hours a day until the end of 1864 and 12 hours a day in 1865. Open cut mining then ceased. Purshouse in Wolverhampton, England, was of special interest.This photograph is of primary social significance to the Beechworth community because it depicts a 19th-century grain mill, manufactured by B.M. Purshouse in Wolverhampton, England, which was probably used at flour mills in the Ovens District, such as that at Tarrawingee, which opened in 1866. The purchase of agricultural machinery such as the grain mill accompanied the expansion of agriculture, including grain growing, in the Ovens District following the gold mining prosperity of the 1850s.
