The Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial is located on Anzac Parade in Canberra, the Nation's Capital. In May 1988 the Federal Government announced its support for the project. In August 1988 the first official Vietnam Veterans’ Day was held. In September, the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Ben Humphries, launched two television commercials designed to encourage donations and handed over a cheque for $12,500. Subsequent support from the Federal Government brought this to $250,000. However the bulk of the funds cam from public donation, together with some corporate sponsorship. The final cost for the memorial was just over $1.2 million. Medallion is inset into red coloured card over mount board. It is double sided so that the medallion can be viewed from both sides. Silver raised lettering on rectangular black ribbon: "For Those Who Served Suffered and Died - Vietnam 1962 - 1973" Black lettering on red card: "This Commemorative Medallion was presented to the Orbost Shire Council by the Vietnam Veterans Association in recognition of the generosity of the people of the Orbost Shire, the Shire Council and the local R.S.L. in raising $1000, toward the building of the Vietnam Veterans National Memorial in Canberra. This Shire was the first area in the state to raise $1000." A relic of the battlefield, the Long Tan bayonet was collected on 19/08/1966 by 2nd Lt D R Sabben. He later presented it to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Masonic Lodge ( No. 921) at the South Eastern Masonic Centre in Keysborough, Victoria (now defunct) after they requested an artefact from the battle. In 2001, the SLR bayonet was mounted into a stone ashlar (cube) in the memory of National Serviceman Lt Gordon Sharp of 6th Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR) who died in the Battle of Long Tan, 18th August 1966, along with 17 other young Australian soldiers. The artefact was used in Masonic ceremonies held on Vietnam Veterans Day (August 18th) from 2001 until 2024, when it was presented to the National Vietnam Veterans Museum.White marble cube with bayonet in its scabbard fixed into the top of it. The Vietnam War - 50 Years On. This project began with a meeting between Cliff Richards President BDRSL, Ward Buckeridge, Trish Di Donato from Bendigo South East Secondary College re 50 years on from the Vietnam War in May 2016. The President promised Veterans and the Trish promised a a team of students. Seven Vietnam Veterans put their hand up and sixteen students met at the end of May and from there it progressed to a publication and DVD with their oral stories. There would be a launch at the BDRSL on November 2nd with Veterans Students,Teachers and Parents. The project also involved a trip to the Seymour Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk. Students and Veterans also attended the Vietnam Veterans Day Service in Pall Mall in front of the Soldiers Memorial Institute and photos taken. The Veterans were; Geoff Leach, Peter Ball, Bill Clark, Cliff Richards, Richard Penna, Michael Paine, Brian Timberlake. Production, gloss colour covers with 10 gloss colour pages double sided with all print and photos in colour. Inside the rear cover is a CD with the interviews with 7 Vietnam Veterans in 2016.
