The Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial is located on Anzac Parade in Canberra, the Nation's Capital. In May 1988 the Federal Government announced its support for the project. In August 1988 the first official Vietnam Veterans’ Day was held. In September, the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Ben Humphries, launched two television commercials designed to encourage donations and handed over a cheque for $12,500. Subsequent support from the Federal Government brought this to $250,000. However the bulk of the funds cam from public donation, together with some corporate sponsorship. The final cost for the memorial was just over $1.2 million. Victorian State Governor John Landy AC, MBE, re-dedicates the 75-year-old Memorial Tower of Remembrance at Kangaroo Ground with the unveiling of the cast bronze plaques which recognize the Australian participation in the Armed Conflicts of Korea 1950-1953, Borneo 1962-1966, Malaya 1948-1960, and Vietnam 1962-1973 - on the memorial's 75th anniversary to those who served in Armed Conflicts between 1948 and 1972. Harry Gillham, President of EDHS and Convenor of the Nillumbik Shire Council's Advisory Committee for the War memorial at Kangaroo Ground was for some years working on the refurbishment of the Tower of Rememberance and the surrounding park. The Committee decided to produce plaques to commemorate the armed conflicts in Korea, Malaysia, Borneo and Vietnam. The plaques were funded by public donations and cost $10,000. The community donated via donation boxes placed at Eltham Library. NL 140 Sept 2001 Governor John landy and other digniaries attended the event for the unveiling of the plaque. Gov Landy unveiled the plaque which was attached to the historical tower in November 2001. Framed photo collage of Australian involvement in Vietnam.In the centre of the collage there is a bronze plaque wich reads: VIETNAM The Vietnam War was a military conflict that occurred in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia from 1959 to 30 April 1975. The was was fought between the communist North vietnam, supported by its communist allies, and the government of South Vietnam, supported by the united States and other member nations of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) The United States entered the war to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam as part of their wider strategy of containment. Military advisors arrived beginning n 1950. U.S. involvemeny escalated in the early 1960s and combat units were deployed beginning in 1965. Invollvement peaked in 1968 at the time of the Tet Offensive. Despite a peace treaty signed by all parties in january 1973, fighting continued. In response to the anti-war movement, the U.S. Congress passed the Case-Church Amendment in June 1973 prohibiting furtherdirect U.S. military intervention without Congressional authorization yet the U.S.was still heavily invested in the war until 1975, when North Vietnam captured Saigon. North and South Vietnam were reunified the following year. The war exacted a huge human cost in terms of facilities, including 3 to 4 million Vietnamese from both sides, 1.5 to 2 million Laotians and Cambodians, and 58,159 U.S. soldiers. Depicting the boarding of Australian Troops from Vung Tau, Vietnam for return to Australia following active service in Vietnam. HMAS Sydney was a Majestic-class light aircraft carrier operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). She was built for the Royal Navy and launched as HMS Terrible (93) in 1944, but was not completed before the end of World War II. The carrier was sold to Australia in 1947, completed, and commissioned into the RAN as Sydney in 1948. Sydney was the first of three conventional aircraft carriers to serve in the RAN, and operated as the navy's flagship during the early part of her career. From late 1951 to early 1952, she operated off the coast of Korea during the Korean War, making her the first carrier owned by a Commonwealth Dominion, and the only carrier in the RAN, to see wartime service. Retasked as a training vessel following the 1955 arrival of her modernised sister ship, HMAS Melbourne, Sydney remained in service until 1958, when she was placed in reserve as surplus to requirements. The need for a sealift capability saw the ship modified for service as a fast troop transport, and recommissioned in 1962. Sydney was initially used for training and a single supply run in support of Malaysia's defence policy against Indonesia, but in 1965, she sailed on the first voyage to Vũng Tàu, transporting soldiers and equipment to serve in the Vietnam War. 25 voyages to Vietnam were made between 1965 and 1972, earning the ship the nickname "Vung Tau Ferry". Sydney was decommissioned in 1973, and was not replaced.
