Vines Timber yard was established in 1897 after the timber yard established by Donald Douglas in 1887 was acquired by William James Vine in 1896. Vines Timber yard was managed by William and his son Albert Ernest (Ernie) until the 1950s when there were no vacant blocks of land in Surrey Hills and less requirement for building materials. William Vine is listed in the 1893 directory as living in Albany Crescent. He married Sarah Elizabeth Gunner in 1881. The business was badly affected by a large fire in 1920. Albert Vine (1903-1968) was a Camberwell councillor from 1926-1934. He was also Mayor of Camberwell in 1940/41 and a councillor from 1937-1944. Albert Ernest Vine Snr, was a City of Camberwell Councillor from 1926-1934 and 1937-1944. He was also Mayor of Camberwell in 1940/41. There is a sundial in the Surrey Gardens erected in his memory. Known as Ernest, he and his wife Edith (nee Sword) lived at 3 Norfolk Road from 1920-1945. Earlier addresses are on file in Alan Holt card index. He was active in Surrey Hills Progress Association. He was the son of William James Vine (1860-1920) and Sarah Elizabeth Gunner (1859-1941). W J Vine & Co Timber Yards were located at 587-593 Canterbury Road. Elizabeth Gunner's brother was Henry Gabez Gunner (1862-1940), a builder in the Surrey Hills area. Box Hill Reporter (6/6/19) records that Ernest applied to Camberwell City Council for permission to subdivide land in Norfolk Road with a frontage of 85' into 2 equal lots for a dwelling to be erected on each, one for himself and the other for his mother. Albert Ernest & Edith Vine had the following children: Albert Ernest Jnr (b 1904), Robert (b 1908), Edgar (b 1912), Inez (b 1915) and Beth (b 1918). Both No 1 & No 3 were demolished c1970.Black and white photo of a 1920s style single-storey weatherbaord home with leadlight windows, a tiled roof and a wide veranda supported by timber columns on stucco pillars. The veranda has a simple timber balastrade and a flight of timber stairs to it. There does not appear to be front fence. A light tan book, Vine and Branches - The Story of St Patrick's, Lilydale Parish Centenary Year 1989 with a full wrap around photograph of the church on the occasion of its opening on March 17, 1871. The original old wooden church is seen at the right of the new one. It shows parishioners in their Sunday best clothes gathered outside. There are horses and a buggy. The title is printed in black lettering outlined in white. The spine has the title in similar print. On the bottom right hand corner of the front cover is a small yellow price sticker $12.50. Inside on the front end paper is a Mont De Lancey round stamp. There is a Dedication and a copy of a coloured certificate from The Holy Father giving his blessing to the priest and parishioners of the church in 1989. The title page has, 'I am the Vine... You are the Branches' and a psalm related to this. The Story of St Patrick's, Lilydale To mark the Centenary of the Parish 1989 is printed at the bottom. There is a list of sponsors, a Foreword, Preface and the history of St Patrick's life preceding the 28 chapters which give full details of the local people. At the back is Sources of Information and Some illustrations, Thanks, and an Abridged Index. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. The first intake of student for The Graduate Diploma in Occupational Hazard Management was in 1979. The letters are from students wishing to attend. All letters were replied to and a detailed information pack was forwarded to those who were accepted. This pack is shown in Media or can also be seen at Item 26575 on Victorian Collections. The applications come from both male and female students for all over Australia and from many different occupations, workplaces and businesses - private and public. It records over 6,000 graves, some dating back more than 150 years. Index references to total 12,558 entries. Compilation took over 20 years to complete. The graves at Manly Cemetery record two Knights, a Baronet, a General, three MPs, three Mayors of Manly, several Professors, two Judges, two Journalists, a Monsignor, a comedian, a town clerk, a potato merchant, 17 clergymen and a boy scout. Also lying there are the reputed "Man from Snowy River", a CBE, a CMG, a DFC and descendants of the "Flogging Parson", Rev. Samuel MARSDEN. There are people from at least 38 different countries and every state in Australia. Slide photograph of Stanhope Matron Dorrie Vines at the stove in the kitchen. She is wearing the same dress as in other photos from 1959. Several photos appear to have been taken at the same time and some are are marked 11, 12, 13 (see items 02509 - 02515). Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. Stanhope was a residence run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were deceased servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. Stanhope generally looked after girls over 14 either studying or working. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves.
