Bonsema Photography Thomas Peter John Bonsema Sir Arthur Stanley Across bottom of images - Decorations Main St Chiltern TBC Two black and white images of a celebrations in Chiltern for the visit of the Governor of Victoria in 1915 Governor's Visit to Chiltern, Victoria Photograph Governor's Visit to Chiltern, Victoria Thomas Bonsema ...Extract from the Federal Standard (Chiltern, Vic) Fri 12 Mar 1915 VISIT OF STATE GOVERNOR (SIR ARTHUR STANLEY) TO CHILTERN Splendid Street Decorations. Great Enthusiasm. From early morning all hands were busy preparing bunting, and before noon the streets presented a very gay appearance. Along Conness street from the town hall to the opposite end, flags of the Allies fluttered in the breeze, while in Main street the most striking feature to catch the eye was an extra-large Union Jack. The decorations were splendid, and clearly showed that the Chiltern folk are loyal at any rate. Streamers were placed across the road, from Brann's to the Star Hotel, from the Savings Bank to Grant's hotel, from Cannon's to Grant's hotel from Boucher's to Sexton's store, from Browse's to Force's from Scott's to Smyth's hotel, and from Harvey's to pole opposite. Flags were displayed at the FEDERAL STANDARD office, Gallagher's shop, Burke's wine cafe, Ryan's, Black's. Gilmour's (specially decorated), A. Smith's, Bank N.S.W., and Post Office, in fact all the business places and many private residences put out as much bunting as they could possibly get hold of. After being photographed by Mr T. P. J. Bonsema an adjournment was made to the manager's office where Mr Cock proposed the toast of "The King." Our Collection includes several photographs signed BONSEMA WODONGA or sometimes simply TBW. He later moved to Chiltern where his signature on photographs changed to BONSEMA CHILTERN of just his initials. Thomas Peter John Bonsema was born in Wodonga in 1876 to Peter John Bonsema and Mary Ann nee Nash. His name first appears on the Electoral Roll for Wodonga in 1909 and on the Electoral Roll in 1912 he is listed as a photographer. His photographs capture many scenes and events around Wodonga and surrounding areas. After his marriage to Minna Louisa Jones in 1912 moved to Chiltern, Victoria. By 1943 Thomas John Bonsema had relocated to New South Wales and died in Beecroft, NSW on 14th July 1944. Several of his photographs are held in the Victorian State Library and Mitchell Library Sydney Collections. These images are significant because they are the work of a recognised photographer Thomas Bonsema who was born in Wodonga in 1876. They record the visit of the Governor of Victoria Sir Arthur Stanley to Chiltern in 1915.Two black and white images of a celebrations in Chiltern for the visit of the Governor of Victoria in 1915Across bottom of images - Decorations Main St Chiltern TBCbonsema photography, thomas peter john bonsema, sir arthur stanley -

... Public Records Office Victoria (PROV) visit to Eltham Justice Precinct...Assessment ledger Donation Eltham Courthouse Eltham Road District local history centre Public Records Office Victoria (PROV) Rate Books Eltham District Road Board Born Digital Public Records Office Victoria (PROV) visit to Eltham Justice Precinct Photograph Photograph Liz Pidgeon ...The original Shire of Eltham was founded in 1871. Prior to its founding, the district was managed by the Eltham District Road Board, which was established in 1856. The initial rate assessment commenced in 1857 for the year ending October 14, 1858. The honour of being recorded with the first assessment went to a farm of 110 cultivated acres at Lower Plenty, owned by John Porter and occupied by Albert Baines. It was assessed at 6d/acre providing for a rate income of £2 15s. In July 2017, officers at Nillumbik Shire Council discovered some early Eltham Road District Assessment books and donated them to the Eltham District Historical Society. The seven volumes were the district’s first six years of rate assessments. This was a unique and significant record of early settlers in the pre-Shire of Eltham. They immediately became one of the oldest and most valuable items in our collection. An article on page 5 in the Eltham and Whittlesea Shires Advertiser, Friday, 21 November, 1941 titled: ‘District’s Early History‘ states: “The first rate book which is still in existence at the Shire Office is for the year ending October 14, 1858 and is probably the best record possible to indicate the development of the district. At the time properties were rated as follows: Cultivated land. 6d. per acre; pasture land, 1d. per acre: estimated annual value of buildings, etc., 6d in the (pound). The total amount of rate recorded for the year was £153/14/8. Properties were described as being situated at Lower Plenty, Yarra Yarra, Eltham, Lower Eltham, Kangaroo Ground, Yarra Flats, Diamond Creek and the Yarra.” Given the precious nature of this collection, priority was given to digitise the rate books and place them in suitable archival storage to minimise further handling. Subsequent discussion amongst our Collections team arrived at the conclusion that the most appropriate home for this valuable record was the Public Record Office Victoria (PROV), the archive of the State Government of Victoria and who are charged with archiving and caring for all Government related records. An approach was made to PROV who confirmed these records would complete their collection of rate assessment books for Eltham. At a small ceremony held Friday, April 20 at the Local History Centre, Eltham, members of the Society and our Collections team, along with Ms. Vicki Ward, MP for Eltham, presented the seven volumes for 1858-1863 along with the complete set of digital files to Mr. David Taylor, Community Archives Manager and Mr. Charlie Farrugia, Senior Collection Advisor, Public Record Office Victoria.Born Digitalassessment ledger, donation, eltham courthouse, eltham road district, local history centre, public records office victoria (prov), rate books, eltham district road board -

In the beginning, they met at the house of their founder, Mrs Eric Thake, 48 Harp Road, East Kew, but the growth and interest was so rapid that it was soon necessary to find a larger meeting place, so the group moved to the Harrier’s Pavilion in Victoria Park, Kew. At the fifth meeting of the group, a committee was formed, and a constitution adopted on 4 December 1945.The Club was aimed to be non-political, non-sectarian and open to women from any locality. The Club’s motto was “To Help others, Improve Ourselves, and Foster the Community Spirit”. The first twenty years of the Club was recorded in a small, nine-page publication “East Kew Women’s Club : Twenty Years 20-7-1945 - 30-7-1965”.Following the closure of the Club in 1973, after twenty-eight years, its records were deposited with the Kew Historical Society and are thus available for research into the history of women’s groups in the post war period in Australia. The Society holds the Club’s Minute Books of Meetings (1953-73), Attendance Registers (1959-73), Visitors Book, and sundry items of print ephemera published by the Club.Photograph of flowers sent to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1958 by the East Kew Women's Club.east kew women's club, queen elizabeth the queen mother, royal visit (victoria) 1958 -
