The 1914–15 Star was authorised in 1918 and was awarded for service in specified theatres of war between 5 August 1914 and 31 December 1915. A recipient of the 1914 Star could not also be awarded the 1914–15 Star. The medal is accompanied by its original box. The Holgate medals were the first war medals held by BCC archives. They have historical and social significance for the College.The 1914-15 Star is a four pointed star of bright bronze, ensigned with a crown. The obverse has crossed gladius, overlaid with an oak wreath that is ensigned with the cypher of King George V. A scroll bearing the legend 1914-15 is centrally placed across the crossed blades. The 1914-15 Star ribbon has the red white and blue colours of the Empire, in shaded and watered stripes. The medal is accompanied by its original box.Engraved on a scroll in the centre of the medal front: '1914-15' The oak wreath is ensigned with the cypher of King George V. The British War Medal 1914-20 was iInstituted by King George V in 1919 to mark the end of World War I and record the service given. The qualification period was later extended to cover post-war mine clearance and service in Russia during 1919 and 1920. The British War Medal was awarded for service in a theatre of war between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. Those eligible included members of women's organisations; persons on the staffs of military hospitals and members of recognised organisations who handled sick and wounded; and members of other duly recognised or other authorised organisations as specified in medal regulations. The qualification period was later extended to cover post-war mine clearance and service in Russia during 1919 and 1920. Lieut E. S. Holgate was mentioned in despatches for Gallantry in the Field 24/25 April 1918. He was killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux, 27 April, 1918. The British War Medal completes a trio of medals awarded to Lieut. E. S. Holgate, including the 1914-15 Star and the Victory Medal. The Holgate medals were the first war medals held by BCC archives. Instituted in 1914, the Military Cross (MC) was issued for gallantry in presence of the enemy to warrant and junior officers of the Army who were ineligible (on account of their rank) for the Distinguished Service Order. During the First World War, it was also available to equivalent ranks in the Royal Naval Division and Royal Marines and it later became available to equivalent ranks in the RAF for acts of gallantry on land. The equivalent award for the other ranks for gallantry on land in presence of the enemy was the Military Medal (MM) which had been instituted in 1916 and, similarly to the MC, later became available to RAF other ranks serving on the ground. This medal was awared to Pte H. S Holgate for bravery in the field in 1917. Pte Holgate was killed in action at Zonnebeke 11 October 1917. The WWI Death Plaque (Dead Man's Penny) was issued to the next of kin of servicemen/women who had fallen in the Great War between 1914 and 1918. John Mercer Walker entered ballarat College in 1902 and was Dux of the school in 1904. He enlisted as a Private in the 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance and served on Gallipoli. He transferred to 21st Squadron AFC in November 1917 and served in Palestine. He was killed a 22 August 1918 and buried at the Ramleh War Cemetery. Of the 305 Ballarat College old collegians who enlisted in WW1 65 gave their lives for their country. This 'death penny' is representative of the incredible sacrifice given by this huge percentage of the school's community. Round disk cast in bronze gunmetal, which incorporates the following; an image of Britannia holding an oak spray with leaves and acorns, an imperial lion, two dolphins representing Britain's sea power, the emblem of Imperial Germany's eagle being torn to pieces by another lion. The medallion is incased in a heavy card envelope. This photograph was one of ten photographs donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village by Fred Trewartha. Frederick John Fox Trewartha (Fred) was a well-known Warrnambool businessman. He was born in Beeac near Geelong in 1920 and came to Warrnambool with his family as a very young child. He was apprenticed to his father John, as a saddler and later opened his own shop on Raglan Parade. He then moved into working with tarpaulins and canvases for the trucking industry. Fred was keenly interested in photography (and was a member of the Warrnambool Cine Club), yachting and boat building. He kept his yacht moored at Port Fairy for many years and participated in sailing events locally and interstate. He also built boats with his sons. He had the opportunity to meet many older sailors and it's thought this photo (and others in the set) may have been given to him by one of these men. Fred Trewartha died in 2016 in Warrnambool. The "Strathgryfe" was a four masted steel barque built in 1890 by "Russell and Company", Port Glasgow and was owned by Duncan McGillivray (The Strathgryfe Ship Company Limited), Greenock. It arrived in Melbourne in December 1891 from New York. Between 1891 and 1910 it carried merchandise in and out of Australia to ports around the world - Melbourne to London (1892), Newcastle to San Francisco (1894), Capetown to Newcastle (1894), New York to Shanghai (1897), New York to Melbourne (1898), Frederickstadt to Melbourne (1899), Liverpool to Sydney (1900), San Francisco to Brisbane (1903), Newcastle to Pisagna, Chile (1905) and Rotterdam to Melbourne (1910). It carried breadstuffs from San Francisco, coal from Newcastle, wool from Sydney, saltpetre from Hamburg and wheat from Brisbane and Melbourne as well as a variety of general merchandise. In 1898, whilst on route between New York and Melbourne, it came across the Captain and crew of the missing barque "Glen Huntley" which had been reported as "lost" several months earlier. They had been marooned at Tristan D'Acunha (a remote group of volcanic islands in the South Atlantic ocean). Captain McIntyre, of the Strathgryfe, offered to bring Captain Shaw (of the Glen Huntly) on to Melbourne with them but the "old mariner" decided to stay on with his crew till arrangements could be made for rescuing the whole of them. In 1899, when in Melbourne, seven of its crew refused to go to sea in it due to its unsafe conditions. They said the vessel was unseaworthy and that the rigging was unsafe and the lifeboats, not watertight. The Captain (Donald McIntyre) denied the allegations and produced a marine surveyor's certificate as evidence of the condition of the vessel. The men were sentenced to three weeks imprisonment. In 1901 there was a fire on board the Strathgryfe just after it left Sydney for London which resulted in many bales of wool being destroyed. In 1902 it was beached at Shellback island (near Wilson's promontory) for several weeks and had to be considerably dismantled in order to lighten its load enough to allow tugs to pull it back into deep water. In 1910 it was sold to a German firm and renamed "Margretha". It continued to operate in Australian ports until 1914 when it left Sydney for the English Channel with 42,438 bags of wheat. However owing to W.W.1 breaking out, it made for the port of St Michael's where it remained for twenty-one months. Later it was seized by the Portuguese Government and renamed "Graciosa" and was leased back to the English Government. It was sunk by two German submarines in 1918.This photograph is significant as a record of the world wide mercantile trade Australia was engaged in at the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century.Black and white photograph of a four masted barque moored at a dock. John Leslie Shepherdson joined as a private on 31st August 1914 from Tatura, Victoria. His father lived at Birregurra, Victoria. John's military number 857. Australia declared war on Germany on the 4th August. Wounded (shot in the head) landing on the beaches at Gallipoli, 25th April 1915, John recuperated in hospital and rejoined 7th Battalion 25th July 1915. Just in time for Lone Pine where he was wounded a second time 9th August 1915. While recovering was promoted to Sergeant and sent to 7th Battalion headquarters as part of 3rd Echelon B.E.F. This unit was reinforcements and returning wounded/sick who could not go back to active service due to wounds. He remained at headquarters as a clerk until the end of the war and was promoted to Lieutenant on recommendation of Secretary of State for valuable services rendered to Australia. John returned to Australia via America (at his own expense) in 1919. Harold Gatty was born on January 5th, 1903 in Campbell Town, Tasmania. He was a navigator and aviation pioneer. He began his career learning navigation at the age of 14 as a midshipman at the Royal Australian Naval College but withdrew after three years and became an apprenticed ship's officer with the Patrick Steamship Company of Sydney. After W. W. 1 he joined the Australian Merchant Navy where he learned the constellations while standing night watch and became an expert in celestial navigation while serving on many ships sailing between Australia and California. In 1927 he moved to California and opened a navigation school and also a laboratory repairing navigational equipment. At this time he became very interested in air navigation and was aware of the limitations of existing methods and instruments for aerial navigation. He began researching ways of improving aerial navigation. Two early inventions of his were his air sextant and a ground speed and drift indicator which formed the basis of the automatic pilot which later came to be standard equipment on most aircraft. He worked with several record breaking pilots including Ann Morrow Lindbergh (who went on to serve as a navigator for her husband Charles Lindbergh), helped Wiley Post break the world record circumnavigating the Earth, invented a new method of "dead reckoning" that revolutionised the ability to fly safely through cloudy conditions without drifting off course and famously navigated a small plane (whilst trying to cross the Pacific) over 1900 km through fog (with no radio) and using only his dead reckoning techniques, back to their starting point in Japan after they developed fuel problems. In 1932 Gatty received the Distinguished Flying Cross from President Hoover. In 1934 Gatty formed the South Seas Commercial Company with Donald Douglas with the aim to deliver air services to the islands of the South Pacific. The Company was sold to Pan Am but he continued to work for them. In 1935 he went on a sailing expedition investigating several small islands in the South Pacific and was briefly marooned on Baker Island. He was able to use his extensive knowledge of seabird habits to save the crew. He was also very interested in the ability of the Polynesians to navigate using the stars. During the Second World War Gatty was given the honorary rank of Group Captain in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and worked for the U. S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the South Pacific. In 1943 he moved to Washington where he developed a survival book (The Raft Book) specifically for boat crews or air crews flying over the Pacific to help them survive and navigate their life rafts in remote areas of the ocean. The original book was 152 pages long however a condensed version was made which consisted of a 64 page booklet, combined map and star chart and calendar strip enclosed in a waterproof slipcase, to be placed in life rafts for emergency use. The booklet included navigational advice and ideas such as ocean currents, estimation of distance, using a compass, measurement of angles, recognising and steering by the stars, land indications from sea birds, migration of sea birds and insects, sounds from the land, the scent of the land and ocean currents and the colour of the sea etc. After W.W.2 Gatty moved to Fiji and formed Fiji Airways (which later became Air Pacific). Harold Gatty died in August 1957.The two copies of "The Raft Book" are significant as they are a written summary of the many methods of sea navigation (both modern and historical) that existed in the 1940's. They are also a record of Harold Gatty, who played a significant role in the development of modern day aerial navigation using his understanding of different sea navigational techniques.Two rectangular brown packets with waterproof coverings (oiled paper) titled "The Raft Book" by Harold Gatty. These cycling medals were awarded to W. S. Toyne. Two of these medals are time medallions relating to the Warrnambool to Melbourne Cycle Race. This race was first held in 1895 and continues to the present day. It was originally a handicap race from Warrnambool to Melbourne but after 1938 it became a Melbourne to Warrnambool race. After 1995 it became a scratch race and today the distance is shorter with the race starting from Avalon. It is the second oldest one-day cycling race in the world and the longest one-day cycling race in Australia. All riders who complete the race in a given time are awarded a Time Medallion. The race was sponsored by the Dunlop company from 1901 to 1927. In 1923, 123 of the 196 riders, who started at 5:30am completed the 165 mile road race and were awarded the time medallion. W. S. Toyne was listed among the some of the first cyclists to go through Camperdown at 8:16am. It was reported that over 50,000 spectators witnessed the progress of the race. These cycling medals belonged to a cyclist, W. S. Toyne, who completed in a significant sporting event in Warrnambool in 1923 and 1924. Clothes brushes are still used today but they were of more importance in the days when white collar workers, both men and women, wore suits and hats and tailored clothing to work and these required frequent brushing to keep them looking good as they were not washable items. Formal work clothes were more likely to be worn, particularly by men, in the 20th century up to about 1970. This case with two brushes would have been used particularly in times of travel. This item is retained as an example of a household item of the past and will be useful for display purposes..1 -This is a brown oval-shaped leather piece rolled over to make a container or case. It has a leather and metal strap and buckle stitched into the front of the case. Produce such as bales of wool, dairy and fresh produce were so marked and the account credited to the relevant producer.
