The portrait was commissioned by the Old Lauristonian Association and painted by W.B. McInnes in 1932. It was exhibited in the Australian Art Exhibition, November 1932, and entered for the Archibald Prize in 1933. The inscription reads "Miss Margaret Irving Founder and headmistress 1901-1933".
