The Bofill family originated in Barcelona in Spain and later migrated to Australia with one daughter. The remainder of the family were born at Waanyarra. Henry Bofill must have had some sort of relationship with Mary Elizabeth Lockett with Jack being born in 1891. Henry later married Evelyn Mildred Grey in 1894. Jack Lockett was the son of Mary Elizabeth Lockett when she was still unmarried. The father of Jack was a man named Henry Bofill, and he was born at Waanyarra on 27th September 1865. It is of note that the Lockett family also lived at Waanyarra and were likely neighbours or knew the Bofill family. Henry later married a woman named Evelyn Mildred Grey and had several children. The family was living somewhere in Melbourne later on when Henry Bofill met with an accident and was killed. He was hit by a motorbike and sidecar in Lygon Street Carlton about 6pm after alighting from a tram. There were a number of witnesses to the accident, and the owner of the motorcycle was charged with manslaughter. Henry Bofill was transferred to St Vincent's Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The mother of Jack Lockett, Mary Elizabeth, was born at Waanyarra on 21st January 1870, the daughter of James and Mary Ann Bryant. Mary gave birth to Jack in 1891. Later she married Robert John Burstall and gave birth to several more children. Murray Comrie Collection. The building depicted was previously used for Barnes' Store at Waanyarra, later relocated to Tarnagulla. William Barnes was a tailor at Tarnagulla and Waanyarra in the 1860s. By the late 1870s the family was living at Grassy Flat. The building was located on the south-eastern corner of the Gladstone-Victoria Street intersection, and for many years housed the chaff-cutting operations of the Calder family. The building gradually fell into disrepair, and was completely dismantled in the 1990s. Jack Lockett was born at Waanyarra in 1891 and grew up on his grandparent's property. He writes with vivid clarity about his school days, fishing in the local creek and about his grandfather who made wine and also delivered milk. After training in both Australia and Britain, the 38th Battalion crossed to France in late November 1916 and moved into the trenches of the Western Front for the first time on 1 December.The 38th fought in its first major battle at Messines, in Belgium, between 7-9 June 1917. It fought in another two major attacks in this sector - the battle of Broodseinde on 4 October, and the battle of Passchendaele on 12 October. Belgium remained the focus of the 38th Battalion's activities for the next five months, until it was rushed south to France in late March 1918 to meet the German Army's Spring Offensive. Jack Lockett was born at Waanyarra on 22 January 1891 to his single mother Mary Lockett. Waanyarra was a gold mining town west of Bendigo but was later abandoned as the gold mining decreased. Jack Lockett grew up on his grandfather's property before his mother's marriage. He was close in age to his uncles, Dick and Alf, being only 6 and 4 years younger.
