This is a collection of 12 coloured photographs of the Warley Hospital and Nursing home donated by Meg Davis. In 1923 the Warley Hospital was established in a house purchased by Mr Thompson. The new hospital was built in 1962 and the Nursing Home Annex was added in the mid 1970's. Dr Harry Jenkins owned Churchill Island from 1936 to 1963 and bequeathed it to Margaret Campbell on his death. Sister Campbell had been nurse to his disabled son and wife and she lived on the island from the time of World War Two. The item was given to Arthur Evans, a family friend, on the day of the auction sale of artifacts when she sold the island, approximately 1973. From 1923 until 2008, Warley Bush Nursing Hospital served the Island. In 1923 benefactors, Mr and Mrs W E Thompson, purchased the home of the late Robert Walpol, and presented it to the people of the island for use as a hospital. Warley was in fact the state's first Bush Nursing Hospital. The original hospital was built in 1924 and the new building opened in 1962. It was closed after not being able to receive funding from State and Federal Governments. It's doors closed on January 31st 2008. A section of the hospital was run as a Nursing Home which opened in 1980. That too is closed. Originally The Warley Hospital built by Robert Walpole in 1908 and moved to its present site in Genista Street, when the present hospital building was erected c 1967. Now owned by Mr Reith.
