This photograph was taken by The Advocate on 1989 featuring the Station Road Deer Park entrance to the I.C.I. Nitrocellulose Plant. The I.C.I. Nitrocellulose Plant on Station Road, Deer Park was part of the ICI Leathercloth Factory, a major industrial complex producing nitrocellulose‑based coated fabrics “Leathercloth”. It operated as a specialised chemical works linked to explosives, aircraft fabric coatings, and waterproof materials. Nitrocellulose (guncotton reacted with nitric acid) was one of the earliest multi‑use synthetic materials. It was used for Explosives (historical origin of the Deer Park site), Aircraft fabric dope (WWI–WWII aviation coatings), Waterproof cloth and coated textiles and Leathercloth (ICI’s trade name for nitrocellulose‑coated fabric used in cars, furniture, bags, and industrial goods). The Station Road plant specialised in the nitrocellulose coating and finishing processes, not explosives manufacture. The history of the Nitrocellulose Plant is tightly connected to the evolution of the Deer Park explosives precinct and the wider ICI industrial township.6748 - I.C.I. Sailmaker's twine is usually stored on a reel. It is wax coated and ready to use. The twine is made from strands of fibres that are plied together. The wax waterproofs the twine and smooths out the fine hairs of the fibres, making it easier to work with. The waxed twine helps prevent the ends of the rope work from fraying. Sailmakers use twine and needles to sew sails and many other canvas items such as bags and covers. Special tools, equipment, benches and seats are needed to work with the large heavy and thick pieces of canvas. Sometimes the sailmaker with have special-purpose tools made for his unique work. The place of work on shore is often called a sailmaker's loft. However, sailmakers also work on the job, on sailing ships and boats. This twine is an example imperative equipment for sailmakers. Sailmaking was an essential trade in the shipping industry of the 17th to 19th and early 20th centuries. Sailmakers were often part of a ship's crew, making repairs as needed and using their skills for other work such as net making.Twine; reel of brown waxed sailmaker's twine.warrnambool, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill, flagstaff hill maritime museum, flagstaff hill maritime village, twine, waxed twine, sailmaker's twine, sailmaker's equipment, sailmaking, canvas work

This rubberised waterproof sheet was introduced in 1917 and intended primarily for lying on or wrapping around bedding rolls but it also served as a rudimentary rain coat. Combining two of these sheets made a very primitive bivouac shelter. They soldiered on well into the 1960s in all theatres of war.Waterproof groundsheet/cape, green rubberised material. waterproof

This coat belonged to Brighton resident Audrey Winifred Pickett (nee Heriot; 1915-2011). The coat is made from the pelts of rakali, also known as the Australian water rat, a native rodent species similar to an otter. Growing up to 35 centimetres in length, rakali typically live in burrows near water, feeding on fish, insects, yabbies and waterbirds. Throughout the early twentieth century, they were widely considered to be a nuisance and were hunted for their soft and waterproof fur. Demand for rakali pelts increased during the 1930s Depression years, when a ban was placed on the import of overseas furs; rakali fur became a popular substitute for the fur of the American muskrat. The species was placed under a protection order in 1938, although periodic culls were allowed until 1957 due to their perceived destruction of irrigation banks and fishing nets. Audrey recalled that the coat was made for her by furrier F. J. Ellemor after a large cull of rakali. The coat was displayed in the window of Ellemor's Block Place store. F. J. Ellemor Pty Ltd was established in 1908 by furrier Francis John Ellemor (1867-1944) and continued into the late twentieth century under the management of his son Wilfred (1801-1972). Francis and his wife Edith lived in Rothesay Avenue, Brighton from the late 1930s.Three-quarter length brown fur coat made of Australian water-rat (rakali) pelts. Wide raised collar and cuffs.
