Wattle Gully Mine holds a pivotal position in the history of the State's quartz mining industry. Seven men were killed at the Great Extended Hustler's mine disaster on 2nd May 1914 by an explosion of dynamite occurring as the men were waiting at the plat to ascend the mine at the end of their shift. No blame was attached to anyone in the findings of the inquisition. It was unknown what caused the dynamite to explode. Three page typed document from original written by Albert Richardson. Wattle Gully Gold Mine was at Chewton. A footwall in mining is the underlying rock mass beneath an inclined fault, vein, or mineral deposit. It is named because miners typically walk on this lower surface while the hanging wall lies above them.
