This photograph was taken on the 20th June 2004 as part of an event called "Successful Tree Planting!", organised by the Wooragee Landcare Group. It was addressed to all local residents and landholders in the area and involved practical demonstration of techniques suitable for successful planting of native trees and shrubs, as well as information about weed control. In the photograph are illustrated from left to right the following people: Chris Robinson; Tony Prowse; unknown child; Lesley Finedon; Ann Henderson, unknown. Revegetation can improve the condition of remnant vegetation in the area and provide habitat for local animals. Correct species selection, including all layers of vegetation, along with proper weather conditions and adequate site preparation, can maximise the successful outcome. Weed-free conditions and protection from rabbits and kangaroos are two more factors contributing to a quick plant growth. Wooragee Landcare, since its establishment in 1998, has organised a series of events and activities in order to promote weed and pest control, provide assistance and knowledge to landholders and ensure sustainability and protection of natural vegetation.The photograph is an example of the type of events and activities organised by Wooragee Landcare to educate and inform local residents and landholders on the most suitable techniques for successful planting of native trees and shrubs. The images in the Bogong Village Collection were displayed in Bogong Jack’s Tavern for over 20 years and were donated to the Falls Creek Museum when the Tavern closed in 2021. In 1939, the State Electricity Commission of Victoria established a field headquarters at Bogong to house workers and their families for the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme which ran from the 1930s to the 1960s. The workmen's camp was originally started with tents and was called Junction Camp. By 1947, the village supported 300 workers and their families. It included 40 houses, a hostel for single staff, a post office, a police station, a medical centre, and a primary school. The staff hostel was known as Kiewa House. At the completion of the Scheme, in the 1960s, the village was opened to public/tourism use. In 1968 the Victorian Education Department acquired the camp buildings and four houses from the State Electricity Commission of Victoria to establish an Outdoor Education Centre which operated for over 50 years. The Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme was privatized in the 1990s and sold to Southern Hydro, before being acquired by AGL in 2005. Ventifacts are sand-blasted rocks that are typically faceted and often display parallel grooves carved by wind-blown sand. They are useful indicators of wind direction and strength in environments such as deserts, mountains, and coastal areas because they are usually not hidden by later sediment, soil or vegetation cover. In Antarctica ventifaction is strongly related to the composition or type of rock. Ventifacts are important because they provide evidence for abraders such as sand, dust or snow and ice crystals, and offer a unique understanding of past wind processes that are effective in the reconstruction of past wind flow conditions and can provides clues to weather and climate changes in the past. Interestingly ventifacts have also been found on the surface of Mars. They were a threat to the NASA rover due to the sharp angles of the facets, created by the Martian wind over the course of millions of years. These Martian ventifacts act like weathervanes for past wind and weather patterns on the red planet in a similar manner to those found on earth.The Geological Survey of Victoria was instigated in response to the Victorian Gold Rush which began around 1851 in the Beechworth, Castlemaine, Daylesford, Bendigo and Ballarat areas. The survey was conducted by Alfred Richard Cecil Selwyn from his arrival in December 1852 until his resignation in 1869and during this time he trained many notable geologists, e.g. Aplin, Wilkinson, Daintree, who went on to other State survey senior positions. A barometer is an instrument used for measuring atmosphere pressure thus determining weather changes.The first apparatus generally accepted as a barometer was that set up in Florence in 1644 by Evangelista Torricelli (1608–1647), a mathematician and physicist. Torricelli filled a glass tube with mercury, sealed it at one end, and inverted it with its open end in a dish of mercury. The level always fell a short way down the tube, then settled at a height of about thirty inches. He concluded correctly that the mercury column was sustained by the weight of the air pressing on the open surface of mercury, and further experiments convinced him that the space above the mercury in the tube was a vacuum. He noted that the level rose and fell with changing temperature, but he was unable to use his apparatus to measure variations in the weight of the atmosphere because he had not foreseen that temperature would affect the level of the mercury. News of this experiment circulated quickly among European scientists, who hastened to replicate the experiment. Torricelli's conclusions were not universally accepted because some disputed whether the air had weight, while both Aristotle and the Catholic Church denied the possibility of a vacuum. In France, the philosopher René Descartes (1596–1650) seems to have been the first person, probably in 1647, to attach a graduated scale to the tube so that he could record any changes attributable to the weather. Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) , was a descendant of one of the earliest settler families in Kew. Employed at the Kew Asylum as a 'public servant', he was a skilled amateur photographer, photographing numerous scenes in Kew and on his travels around Victoria. The majority of his photographs date from 1916 to 1929. His finest photographs are housed in two photograph albums. Digital copy of a photograph from page 5 of the 47-page photograph album containing 261 gelatinous silver images, loaned by Diane Washfold with permission given to digitise and hold a copy in our collection. This is a photograph of the Zig-Zag Bridge that crossed the river at Kew during a flood in January 1924. Cattlemen wore coats when working with their cattle especially during the winter in the Kiewa Valley and when travelling on horses with cattle to, on and from the High Plains where they stayed for days during summer attending and mustering their cattle. The coats protected the cattlemen from harsh weather conditions including snow which sometimes fell in summer. This coat was owned and worn by Richard Marum who owned a farm in Tawonga south. He was the descendant of Kyran Marum, the stockman, who worked for Georgina Huggins. Brown leather full length coat with collar, lapel, long sleeves and buttoning up the front. This stencil was used as a ship identifier stamp for the transportation of wool bales. SS Runic was the largest refrigerated cargo liner during its time. In 1961 the ship struck the Middleton Reef on route from Brisbane to Auckland. The ship was unable to re-float due to weather conditions and was declared a constructive loss. Although marked as not to be used as trade, the isolation and sometimes difficult terrain rules out using larger and more delicate scales. In the early 1900s rough roads and severe weather conditions forced traders to be more flexible in trading with weights and measures. The "close enough is good enough" doctrine was the Australian outback rule of thumb. The significance of this item in the Kiewa Valley during this period demonstrates the slower acceptance of accurate trading measure using the country side principle "my hand shake is my bond". In the Kiewa Valley small quantity commercial undertakings e.g. gold mining, fur pelts and rabbit meat trade did not require bulk weight type scales. Commerce in rural production e.g. fruit and vegetables involved more farmers and their staff in a barter and/or "in kind" payments. This was more so in the depression years 1929 to late 1930s. Self sufficiency was to a large extent more attainable in this region than in the city/ large country town environment. The Australian "fair go" ethical approach to life and commerce was very much ingrained in those living in country regions, like Kiewa Valley as is demonstrated by the not so accurate hand balance, spring loaded scales. In October 1947 construction was commenced on the erection of the workmen's camp at Rocky Valley. Also in 1947 construction of a stream diversion was commenced to allow excavation to commence for the dam wall. In the summer of 1948/49, stripping of the foundation area on both sides of the river was carried out. Weather conditions were not always favourable during the construction, particularly 1955/56 summer, and work would have to cease each year for the winter season due to the severe conditions. The dam is a earth and rock fill structure with a height of about 30.5 metres and crest length 518.16 metres and was completed in March, 1959.These photographs show the type of terrain in the area prior to the construction and filling of Rocky Valley Dam. Also of interest is the type of accommodation provided for those working on the construction and the early cranes available in the 1940/50's. A puttee is a cloth band that was wound round a soldier’s leg from their ankle to their knee. They were designed to provide support when walking and protect against harsh weather conditions. Many Australian soldiers developed a painful medical condition during their service on the Western Front called trench foot. The primary causes were wet feet and unsanitary conditions but puttees were also partly to blame as they limited circulation to the lower leg and foot. These puttees are a collectors item, they are the real thing, used in WW1 and made a short return in WW2 and were used as ceremonial dress in Malaysia in the 1960s, these ones are WW2 issue. The South Australian Merino has been developed to perform well in the more arid, pastoral environments found in areas of South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales. Goliath has greasier wool which protects the fibre in adverse weather conditions. His wool is generally the strongest of the Australian Merinos, from 22 microns and upwards. Record Merino prices peaked in the 1980s when a Merino ram secured $450 000 at the 1989 Royal Adelaide Show ram sales. Bogong Village, which was known as “The Junction”, is well recorded. The first tent camp was at the junction of Pretty Valley and Rocky Valley streams in the early 40’s. Further downstream were the sawmill, stables and blacksmith’s forge. Horses were the main mode of transport in the early days. The road to Bogong had reached the lookout spur just beyond Roper’s Spur track just before the 1939 fires. The early forties saw rapid growth of the village, with single and married men’s quarters, workshops, mess huts and administrative offices. The facilities necessary for communal living were quickly in place- a post office, police station, co-op store, medical centre, community hall/theatre, tennis courts and school.
