Handwritten notes on the Princess Alexandra Mine. 24/11/1900 Shaft sunk 7 feet & timbered 15 feet total from plat 26 feet and from surface 2,311 feet. 8/12/1900 Finished sinking shaft, removed penthouse and cistern, fixed skids, ladders etc & are now enlarging 2225 ft plat. 16/2/1901 West x cut at 2285 ft. driven 17 feet, total 41 ft passed through 3 lavas and in the end have a back underlying west and carrying stone. Winze below 2225 feet, sunk 13 feet, total 18 feet - - at 15 ft saw a couple of colours of gold. Last Report 21/12/1901 Xcut east from 2165 ft in 13 ft in hard sandstone spurs - - Expect to get more stone near the black leader which is about 20 ft up. Black and white photograph of an image. Poppet head, overhead tramway, mine buildings, dam. Inscriptions: on front at bottom - printed 'United Devonshire'. Inscriptions: on back, type written. 'The 'United Devonshire' - New Chum Line of Reef'. Situated in the Devonshire Valley immediately south of Victoria St, Eaglehawk. Was the leading mine in the field in the years 1883-4 and 1885 during which time it produced 65,898 oz of gold and paid $(?)399,800 in dividends. This mine was then situated on what in January, 1902, became the West Shaft. The Company was then amalgamated with the 'Princess Alexandra' (approx 100 yds further east) which then became the Main Shaft of the 'United Devonshire'. All typed on paper and glued to back of image. Black and white photograph of an image. Poppet head, overhead tramway, mine buildings, dam. Inscriptions: on front at bottom - printed 'United Devonshire'. Inscriptions: on back, type written. 'The 'United Devonshire' - New Chum Line of Reef'. Situated in the Devonshire Valley immediately south of Victoria St, Eaglehawk. Was the leading mine in the field in the years 1883-4 and 1885 during which time it produced 65,898 oz of gold and paid $(?)399,800 in dividends. This mine was then situated on what in January, 1902, became the West Shaft. The Company was then amalgamated with the 'Princess Alexandra' (approx 100 yds further east) which then became the Main Shaft of the 'United Devonshire'. Albert Richardson, a local historian, wrote widely on the gold mines of Bendigo. The mining documents in this collection are representative of the information he gathered and recorded on many of the mines on the field. The locations of the mines discussed by Albert Richardson in the reports, are detailed below: Victoria Quartz Gold Mine: located on Victoria Hill, Ironbark, 'Approximately 220 yards west of western footpath of Eaglehawk Road, where Victoria Street terminates and slightly to the south of the imaginary extension of that Street'. United Hustlers and Redan Gold Mine: ' The area includes Holdsworth Road, Holmes Road, Havillah Road and Wood's Street in the North Bendigo, Long Gully area. Main or 'Redan' shaft, approx 155 yards west from the western edge of Holmes Road and about 200 yards north from the edge of Havilah Road' United Devonshire Gold Mine, Eaglehawk: 'Approximately 176 yards south-east of the intersection of Victoria Street and Upper Road, on south-western side'. South New Moon Gold Mine: ' one mile north from Eaglehawk post Office, on reaching Hodgsons Street, continue straight on and over the hill' Collection of Bendigo mining company reports researched and handwritten by Albert Richardson: a. One page handwritten document (copy) detailing information on the Red, White and Blue Extended on the Sheepshead line of reef, including dates of operation, sill of shaft, depth of shaft, production, Legal Manager. c. Seven page handwritten document (copy) detailing information on the United Hustlers and Redan Mine on the Hustlers' line of reef. Information includes: depth of shafts - Main or Redan and South or K.K., locality, poppet heads, engine house, winding engine, air compressor, boilers, fuel, winding ropes.
