The Tower Hill Reserve is located inside a dormant volcano, and features a lake and wetlands. It became Victoria's first national park in 1892, but by the 1930s the early settlers had cleared much of the land for grazing, cropping and quarrying. In the 1960s the bare hills and islands were revegetated based in species identified from Eugene von Guerard's painting of Tower Hill. Tower Hill was formed around 30,000 years ago in a violent volcanic eruption. The initial eruption created the outer rim of the volcano, and later smaller eruptions formed the internal hills that are evident today. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. Like many species of quail, the Brown Quail is often difficult to see, as it inhabits rank, overgrown grassy areas, often in damp, low-lying patches beside wetlands. They are difficult to flush from this cover, preferring to squat among the grass or run quickly off through the vegetation rather than fly off. As is the case with many species that inhabit dense habitats, the Brown Quail may be heard more often than it is seen, with its characteristically mournful two-note call whistle often heard at dawn and dusk. The Brown Quail is found across northern and eastern Australia, from the Kimberley region in Western Australia to Victoria and Tasmania, as well as in south-western Australia. It is also found in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, and has been introduced to New Zealand. The Brown Quail feeds in the early morning or evening, on the ground, mainly on seeds and green shoots, but also on insects. It is variable in colour, ranging from red brown to grey brown with fine white streaks and black barring above, and chestnut brown below. The eye is red to yellow, the bill black and the legs and feet orange-yellow. In Tasmania, this species is called the Swamp Quail and tends to be larger and darker than mainland birds, with a pale yellow eye. Female Brown Quails are larger and may be more heavily marked with black and paler below than males. The Kookaburra is a sociable bird commonly seen in small flocks. These flocks mainly consist of family members. If not in flocks, these birds are commonly seen in pairs. They have a distinct appearance with brown wings, back and brown around the eyes, with majority of the plumage being white. This species reside in woodlands and open forests, however they can be seen in parks, wetlands, farms and any other space that is open with grass. This native Australian bird can mainly be found across the eastern Australia, however they have been introduced Tasmania, South-west Western Australia and New Zealand. The Australian Hobby is a medium-sized falcon of the Falconidae family, similar in look to the larger sized Peregrine Falcon. This species is widespread and can be found across most of mainland Australia and Tasmania, preferring lightly wooded areas such as timbered wetlands, open wooded farmland, and some urban areas. Their diet consists of small birds, bats, and flying insects, which are caught mid-air. They sometimes hunt cooperatively to catch their prey. The tip of the hooked beak is black which recedes to light blue-grey and then to yellowish near the head join. The legs are also yellow. The Pink-eared Duck can be found throughout Australia, commonly in locations that are timbered and near water. Another name for this bird is Zebra Duck because of the striking bold black and white striped plumage which decorates the duck's neck, breast and stomach. The bill is spoon shaped and the eyes are made of dark coloured glass and surrounded by brown colouring. The bird has brown wings and light coloured legs with webbed toes. This particular specimen stands on a wooden square platform. The Little Black Cormorant is mainly found in freshwater wetlands in Australia and Tasmania. It nests colonially and can sometimes be seen among Heron or Ibis colonies. This specimen has dark webbed feet which enable the bird to catch its prey underwater by diving and using the feet for propulsion. Interestingly, this species have nictitating membranes which cover the eyes underwater protecting them. An Australasian Darter is a waterbird with a distinctive long straight neck and a sharp bill. This feature has resulted in this bird sometimes being called the "snakebird" . This specimen is a slim bird with pale grey to white colouring. This colouring identifies this particular specimen as female. The Australian White Ibis is commonly known by the colloquial names "bin chicken" and "tip turkey" in Australian culture. These nicknames have arisen based on the presence of this bird at garbage locations where it is often seen rummaging through the waste. The Yindjibarndi people of the central and western Pilbara call this species mardungurra. This bird is located throughout the wetlands of eastern, northern and south-western Australia. Initially, it was not seen in urban areas, however, the species has been able to adapt and reduce fear of humans due to the lure of food found in human garbage. They commonly feed on terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates alongside human scraps. The White-faced Heron is a common bird located throughout Australasia, including New Guinea, Torres Strait, Indonesia and New Zealand. It can be found in all parts of Australia with the exception of areas which are too dry. The White-faced heron typically resides in wetland habitats including reefs, rock pools, swamps and rivers. The Latham's Snipe is the largest of the Snipe species in Australia. This species do not breed in Australia. They breed in Japan and on the east Asian mainland and migrate to south East of Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea. They are commonly found in small groups in freshwater wetlands or along the coast in areas with dense cover. These birds use their colouring to help them camouflage with the terrain which makes them very difficult to see. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.466-23: Joseph Richardson came to Australia in 1837 from Liverpool, England. Sarah Arbuckle and her two sisters arrived in 1850. Sarah and Joseph were married when gold was discovered in Victoria. They went to the diggings and had some success. Joseph bought land on Phillip Island when it was open to freehold selection in 1868. The family moved to Phillip Island shortly afterwards, to a house they built on a hill west of Cowes. They called their home "Everton" after a Liverpool suburb. The house still stands in Church Street, known as "Tallawalla". 466-24: The McIlwraith family came from Melton, Victoria to Heath Hill, Rhyll in 1869. They played an important part in the early history of Phillip Island. James was a foundation member of the Trust, John and Alan played their part in the local scene. [from EDHS Newsletter No. 80, September 1991:] SPRING EXCURSION: As usual for October we have arranged a bus tour outside the local area. We will leave from the Eltham Shire Offices at 9.00 am on Sunday 27th October and travel to "The Briars" at Mornington and "Mulberry Hill" at Baxter. The cost will be $16.00 for adults and $8.00 for children. This includes admission to each of the houses and afternoon tea at "Mulberry Hill". Bring your own lunch to eat at "The Briars" and something for morning tea if you wish. "The Briars" is one of the oldest pastoral stations on the Mornington Peninsula. It has historical associations with the early settlement of the district and with Alexander Balcombe who settled in the area about 1843. Near the house is a wetland wildlife reserve with walking paths and bird observation hides. "Mulberry Hill" was the home of Sir Darryl Lindsay and his wife Joan. Darryl (1889-1976) was a member of the famous art family of Lindsays and was a prominent artist in his own right. He was also a noted art administrator, being appointed Director of the National Gallery of Victoria in 1942. Joan Lindsay (1896-1984) was an important writer. Her best known work was "Picnic at Hanging Rock". Members may find it interesting to read her autobiography "Time Without Clocks" prior to this trip. Members are welcome to bring their friends.
