This vehicle is a Chevrolet but was fitted out as an ambulance at Fisherman's Bend, near Melbourne, Victoria by General Motors Holden. It was used by the Royal Australian Air Force during the Second World War. Purchased by Metropolitan Ambulance Service in 1989 from a Military Museum. This vehicle appeared in the filming of the movie "The White Mouse" (the story of Nancy Wake, French Resistance worker in the second World War). This is a photo of the "Queen Competition", probably the best remembered entertainment of the 1930's. Four local lasses were chosen to represent the following: Bellfield Hotel, Grampians House, The Cricket Club and the Grampians Mountains. When the long awaited evening came each Queen and her attendants paraded through the hall, the results were announced and the winner (who this year was Valerie Evans) took her place on a throne erected in the middle of the stage. The other Queens made their way to thrones on either side of her. The audience were treated to a right royal display as the "Bishop" placed a crown on the winner's head. Much merriment followed including a play, with students dressed as Minnie and Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters. For the names of the people in the photo refer to "Bridging the Gap" by Ida Stanton, p.88. The photo shows a group of people arranged on and below a dais. There is a woman dressed as royalty sitting on a throne in the centre, flanked by a man dressed as a bishop on the left and a man dressed as a courtier on the right. There are two young girls in long white dresses wearing flowered bands in their hair standing in front of the men. There are more girls in white dresses and flower bands along both sided of the dais and two youths wearing ruffle fronted shirts and holding batons/walking sticks(?) at the front of each row of girls. The Theatre was “de rigueur with the gallants and belles of the period. Dainty ladies and white gloved, stiff collared dandies thronged the ‘promenade’ which runs under the theatre.” (Herald 5 Feb 1934) However by 1885, after a fire, the building had been rebuilt to include the three level Bijou Theatre. In November 1890, Arthur Streeton worked there briefly as a scenery painter. The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. These Disney figurine toys belonged to Alfred Haeusler (b.1922) and were played with during his childhood in Wodonga in the 1930s. The character of Donald Duck was released by Disney Studios in 1934, so they can be dated from the mid to late 1930s. These toys are among several objects in the Haeusler Collection concerning early childhood that provides insight into family and home life in early twentieth century Wodonga. The Walt Disney Company animation film studio was established in 1923 in Los Angeles. The period the Haeusler Collection Disney figurines were manufactured in the 1930s is known as the ‘Golden Age’ of Disney filmmaking, beginning with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and ending with Bambi. This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of domestic and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history, social history, and women’s history. This puzzle was used by the Parker family. You probably had a set similar to these; I know I did as a kid. While these haven't completely vanished from the toy landscape, there are still a few sets of "Puzzle Blocks" being made today. Basically, these were six puzzles in one, made up of wooden cubes, each with 1/20 of the image glued to them. Usually they came in a tray or carrying case, allowing the owner to have a place to assemble the pictures.
