This tile was produced in 1938 to honour the 40th anniversary of Queen wilhelmina's succession to the Dutch throne.Significant because of the Dutch people's connection to their Royal House.A small square commemorative tile in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the reign of Queen Wilhelmina. Basically blue, it also features an orange tree with fruit, the Amsterdam city coat of arms and an inscription. On the front: "Regeerings Jubileum Koningin Wilhelmina 1898-1938". (Queen Wihelmina Jubilee 1898-1938). On the back: "Koninklyk Goedewaagen Gouda" and "NRvGelder&Co Amsterdam". A hole to enable hanging has been pierced in one corner .

John Kruse was the brother of August Schwerkolt"s second wife, Wilhelmina. Born in Germany he had spent some time in Australia bur eventually settled in Pittsburg USA. Thirteen years after August died, Wilhelmina moved to Pittsburg with John & Mary, but within three years Wilhelmina and son John had died. Mary, then an orphan lived with uncle John Kruse. Queen Wilhelmina celebrated her silver jubilee in 1923.Princess Wilhelmina was only 10 years old when her father (King Willem III) passed away in1890. Until she became of age 8 years later her mother, Queen Emma, ruled as Queen Regent. The Dutch are traditionally proud of their Royal Family and this is one of the commemorative items with which the country honoured the Queen's silver jubilee in 1923 Shaped as a soup plate the carved out bottom carries an image of Queen Wilhelmina and the inscription "1898-1923". A branch of oranges with a golden W placed in its centre partly encircles the image. The plate is edged with three green circles. "1898-1923".

In 1898, when Princess Wilhelmina attained her majority, she succeeded her Mother, Queen Emma, who had been Regent for 10 years. Wilhelmina reigned for 50 years until her abdication in favour of her daughter Juliana in 1948.The House of Orange is one of the most popular monarchies in Western democracies. Widespread celebrations accompanied the Abdication/Accession. A souvenir pottery mug handed out to school children in Amsterdam in 1948 to commemorate the abdication of Queen Wilhelmina and the accession to the throne of Queen Juliana. This kind of mug (without a handle) was typically used by children to drink their milk. It is illustrated with the initials of the two Queens surrounded by oranges (for the House of Orange). Blue banners link the bunches of oranges. There is also a depiction of the famous steeple of the Wester Church, the Amsterdam coat of Arms, a ship, a bridge and a typical canal house.Above the W: "Dankbaar voor het verleden" (Grateful for the past) 1898-1948. On 1 June 1901, the Australian Town and Country Journal reported that: "A few couples found time to marry during, or just after, the Royal visit. A pretty double wedding took place at Ivy Grange, Kew, the residence of the bride's father, on May 15, when Mr. Samuel Howell, eldest son of the late Richard Howell, of Chocolyn, Camperdown, became the husband of Miss Olive Wilhelmina Beath, fourth daughter of Mr. David Beath, and Mr. William Elder, second son of Mr. Nairne G. Elder, of Rokewood, espoused Miss Endora Anne Beath, fifth daughter of Mr. David Beath. The brides were dressed alike in white satin duchesse, with gathered satin and chiffon, transparent yokes and sleeves of chiffon, embroidered tulle veils, with coronet of orange blossom. The happy couples vary wisely chose different districts for their honeymoon trips, Mr. and Mrs. Howell visiting Lorne, while Mr. and Mrs. W Elder went off to the Blue Mountains, N.S.W. The two brides were attended by six bridesmaids, all dressed alike in gowns of white Indian lawn, with tucks and insertions of Valenciennes lace, sashes of white satin and instead of hats wore on their hair pretty wreaths of Parma violets, and carried shower bouquets of Parma violets tied with heliotrope ribbons." The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s.
