On the second and third page of this Newsletter is an article entitled ''The guns of the 'Nelson''', written by Doug Mills, Castlemaine. The Warship NELSON underwent alterations in 1860, including cut down to two decks and lengthened, her armaments reduced to 72 guns. Two 7inch 68 pounder guns were added to her armament. On February 7, 1867, she was officially given to the Colony if Victoria by the Imperial Government. At the time her Commander was Captain Charles B. Payne. The Warship reached Melbourne on 4th February 1868. Relics of the NELSON were auctioned at Williamstown Victoria Naval Depot, and her two anchors are preserved for public display at Williamstown. An active demand for a share of the guns from various towns in the State. Ballarat received four (4) guns, Bendigo and Castlemaine two (2) each, while one has been given to each of the following towns: - Ararat, Tarnagulla, Hamilton, Bacchus Marsh, Echuca and Geelong.document, williamstown historical society -

With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995. A brochure containing a map of the area and photos and information on key properties (2148.01) and an interactive CD (2148.02) containing information and photographs on 91 buildings and their occupants over time were produced. The project subsequently won the 2007 Victorian Local History Award for research and is now available on the PMHPS website. History of a Street Precinct Port Melbourne Historical & Preservation Society ...In 2005 Margaret BRIDE, Graham BRIDE and David THOMPSON, members of PMHPS, completed the History of a Street Precinct project documenting 80 years plus of the history of the area bounded by Williamstown Road and Evans, Bridge and Farrell Streets, since 1880. A brochure containing a map of the area and photos and information on key properties (2148.01) and an interactive CD (2148.02) containing information and photographs on 91 buildings and their occupants over time were produced.
