Badge received by Dorothy Kiely in 2012 on the 70th anniversary of the Australian Women's Land Army. The Australian Women’s Land Army (AWLA) was formed during the Second World War to combat rising labour shortages in the farming sector. From December 1941, when Japan entered the war, the nation’s need to build up its armed forces was placed above the needs of other industries. Agricultural labour was steadily diverted to the armed services and war industry To meet the shortfall in rural labour, State and private women’s land organisations were organised, modelled on those established in Great Britain during the First and Second World Wars. A national body was formed on 27 July 1942 under the jurisdiction of the Director General of Manpower. While policy was devised by the Commonwealth Government, the organisation of the AWLA remained State-based. An extensive recruiting campaign was undertaken for new members. Most members of the existing land armies were later incorporated into the AWLA as well. In the 2000s Legacy released a range of Legacy Bears to expand the merchandise available for sale during Legacy Week and at other fundraising opportunities during the year. This special edition WW2 land army bear was released in 2019. The Women's Land Army (WLA) was a British civilian group created during World War II to replace the men called up for the military. Over 80,000 women served working on farms, in sawmills, and in forestry. They became know as Land Girls and Lumber Jills. Joined the Victorian Volunteer Cadets 1899 to 1906, joined the permanent Military Forces 1906 No 86 age 23 years 4 months and rose through the ranks to Captain when he enlisted in the AIF as a Capt in 4th INF Brigade HQ age 30 years on 23.9.1914, embark for Egypt 22.12.1914, embark for Gallipoli 22.12.1914, promoted to Major 23.5.1915 and transfers to 2nd INF Brigade, awarded MID 12.6.1915, promoted Lt Col and to Command 7th Batt, embark for France 13.4.1916, awarded MID 13.11.1916, awarded Order of the White Eagle (Serbian), he was Gassed but remained on duty at Pozieres, awarded DSO 1.1.1917, appointed Staff Officer HQ 1st Anzac Corps 12.3.1917 then T/Col, T/Brig General through to 7.10.1918, awarded MID and CMG, 1.10.1919 appointed Director General repatriation and demobilisation AIF, resigned appointed in England 21.3.1920. Post WW1 on return to Australia he served in many Military appointments including Honorary Colonel 7th and 38th Battalions.He was made a Knight Batchelor in 1935. Information page detailing the history of Sages Cottage from building in 1853/56 as a homestead, to being purchased in 1976 by the Victoria Conservation Trust. John Edward Sage built the cottage as the homestead for his farm "Eurutta" in 1856. John lived in the cottage with his wife and children up until his death in 1908 with his wife, Maria Sage (nee Baxter) continuing to live there until her death in 1927. Their youngest son, Thomas Holden Sage, and three daughters, Fanny Martha, Annie Agususta and Ellen Amynta continued to live there until their deaths. Thomas died in 1960 but gifted the remaining block of land with the cottage to his [niece?] Annie Moriah Sage a year before his death. Annie was Matron of the Australian Military Forces (AMF) in WW2. [Annie was born in 1895 as the fifth child to Edward Arthur and Mary Anne Sage. She trained in nursing, obtaining her nursing certificate in 1926. 1940 saw Annie join the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS), Australian Imperial Force (AIF). During WWII Annie served as matron for the 2nd/2nd Australian General Hospital in the Middle East. She was made matron-in-chief, AIF (Middle East) in 1940, and was appointed a member of the Red Cross in 1942. Returning to Australia in 1942, she was elevated to deputy matron-in-chief, AMF in February 1943, and sub-sequentially promoted to colonel in March. Her duties included organising the AANS for duty in the South-West Pacific Area and oversaw the training scheme for the Australian Army Medical Women's Service (AAMWS). In September 1945 Annie flew to Sumatra to assist with the repatriation of the twenty four Australian nurses imprisoned by the Japanese. For her war service she was awarded the Florence Nightingale medal (1947) by the International Red Cross. This is a set of 12 photographs taken in 1943 and 1945, during Army’s early years of occupation at Fortuna, Bendigo in WW2. The black and white photographs are contained in a photo album provided by the family of Rosemary (Atkinson) Bowman, who served in the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) and a former member of RA Svy. On 1 Feb 1941, a Cartographic Section was reformed as the Land Headquarters (LHQ) Cartographic Company. Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Major General Sidney Rowell instructed Its OC - Major William Sarll, in the interests of security of plant and to provide against possible damage of air attack, to investigate suitable safer inland accommodation for LHQ Cartographic Company. Major William Sarll inspected many properties before finding one that would meet the requirements of the Cartographic Company. In late 1941, he came to inspect Fortuna, a rambling old mansion dating back to the gold rush, with about fifteen acres of ground in central Bendigo. On 23 March 1942, the Commonwealth of Australia, under the provisions of the National Security Act of 1939, took possession of the house, the old battery buildings and the fifteen acres of grounds. LHQ Cartographic Company moved to Bendigo on 11 Jun 1942, from Mitchell House, Melbourne. The responsibilities of this unit were map compilation, fair drawing and lithographic reproduction, including printing the work of other Units as well as their own. A decision of War Cabinet on 13 August 1941 had authorised the formation of the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS), in order to release men from certain military duties for employment with fighting units. Originally their employment was restricted to traditional female areas and numbers were strictly limited, but the outbreak of the Pacific War in 1942 led to a broadening of employment categories and an increase in numbers. The first AWAS arrived at Fortuna on 26 November 1942 and immediately became an integral part of the unit. Most of these women had artistic talent. Their work included fine drawing work, filling in all the topographical detail on fair copies of field sheets and pasting on names and figures, while others were drawing actual map outlines. Other sections the AWAS worked in were the duffing section, where unwanted features were painted out of the negatives before reproduction, and the retouching section where any defects in the zinc plates were corrected. The AWAS also worked on creating Army posters and other publicity material in this section. Seventy-five AWAS served with the Cartographic Company during the war. Seventy-five AWAS served with the Cartographic Company during the war and Major Sarll paid them a special tribute for their 'untiring efforts' in the Company's war report. Background to the story of the Apron - by Donor. "When I was a child, during World War 2, most women that I knew wore an apron for housework or farm duties. Not only were aprons easier to wash than dresses, they protected their coupon-rationed clothing. My mother worked hard, caring for her family and also working on our orchard in Doncaster. Mother always wore an apron. Those aprons so often carried eggs from the chook shed, fruit from the orchard or kindling for the fire. Most women made their own aprons, if not, they were readily available on stalls at church or school fetes. The Story of the Land Army Apron. I am a collector of embroidered aprons. Some years ago my mother gave me this apron saying it reminded her of one of the Land Army girls who worked on our orchard in Doncaster; (the hoeing, however, would have been around tomato plants, not flowers). The girls wore their full Land Army uniform when leaving the property. My Mother held particularly fond memories of one girl, a city girl from Hawthorn. mother could not recall her name but said she was a really hard worker and eager to learn all she could about growing fruit and vegetables. She lived with us sleeping in one room of our two bedroom sleepout. This apron is interesting for another reason - it has been embroidered using the sewing machine. Note the rows and rows of machining in the blue overalls and the way the loose bobbin thread forms tiny loops over the tight upper thread. The story continued: My nine year old aunt slept in the other room of the sleep out. Now 86 she also has fond memories of this girl from Hawthorn. Aunty Ness left the family farm at Torrumbarry (on the Murray, near Echuca) to help with the war effort. She worked at NASCO, a section of General Motors at Fisherman's Bend where Army Ducks and Landing Craft were in full production. Aunty Ness recalls that they had every second weekend off and made use of this time to catch up on all those necessary domestic and personal pursuits - they did their washing, washed their hair, filed their nails and wrote letters, They didn't go out during the week as there were no dances, no concerts and no films so they made their own entertainment. Aunty Ness also recalls that one day, when they had an unexpected afternoon off, she together with the Land Army girl and two friends packed a picnic lunch, caught the bus to Warrandyte and paddled in the Yarra, chatting and laughing all the while.
