Ben RICHARDSON (1951- ) Born Hobart, Tasmania In 1972 Ben Richadson was awarded a B.Commerce degree in 1972 at the University of Tasmania. From 1978-81 he studied ceramics at the School of Art in Hobart and completed a Master of Art, Design and Environment degree in 2004. Starting out with raku, he was converted to working with local materials and firing with wood by Col Levy, Les Blakebrough and Gwyn Hanssen Pigott, who conducted a woodfiring workshop he attended in 1980. In 1982, he set up the Ridgeline Pottery at Sandford, where he still lives and works, teaching two days a week at TAFE. He was a part-time lecturer in ceramics at the School of Art from 1985-95, and a researcher in the development of Southern Ice porcelain from 1995-97. In 2004, he completed a Master of Art, Design and Environment degree and, in the same year, participated in an international woodfiring workshop and conference in the United States. Tim HOLMES Born Wales Tim Holmes first became interested in pottery on a visit to New Zealand in 1969. After returning home he studied at the local art school, then enrolled at the Harrow School of Art in 1973. While there, he was introduced to Gwyn Hanssen Pigott's work, and returned to Australia to help her set up a pottery in Tasmania. He established his own Garden Island Creek Pottery in 1977, and started making wood-fired pottery, digging and milling his own clay. He used a two- chambered kiln, firing raw- glazed domestic stoneware in the first chamber and earthenware garden pots in the second. In 1988, he moved his pottery to the Potter's Croft at Dunalley on the east coast of Tasmania. He and his wife Tammy now run the Potter's Croft as a bed and breakfast with a craft gallery, and he is still making pottery using a wood-fired kiln. Garden Island Creek Pottery had its own impressed stamp, and work may also be impressed 'TH' or incised 'T. Holmes'. Greg CROWE (1953- ) Born England, arrived Australia 1963 Greg Crowe's intial training was in architecture. In 1980 Greg Crowe established the Hovea Pottery in the hills east of Perth and am constantly firing up new work there 30 years on.In 2008 Greg Crowe undertook a McKnight Residency for Ceramic Artists at the Northern Clay Center, Minnesota, U.S.A., and has demonstrated and exhibited elsewhere in the U.S.A. and Canada, Japan, France, Denmark, Ireland and Singapore. In 1985 he built a wood-fired salt kiln at Hovea with Fergus Stewart, and has specialised in wood-firing and salt-glazing since then, In 1992 he worked with wood firer Sven Bayer in Devon, UK. Gwyn HANSSEN PIGGOT (1935-2013) Born Ballarat Gwyn Hanssen Piggot completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Melbourne University in 1954. She spent three years apprenticed to Ivan McMeekin at Sturt Pottery, Mittagong, New South Wales. Between 1958 and 1965 Gwyn Hanssen-Pigott worked at various potteries in the United Kingdom, including Winchcombe Pottery in Gloucestershire, Leach Pottery at St Ives, and Wenford Bridge Pottery and Aldermaston Pottery in Berkshire. In 1960 she established her own studio in London. The essence of her work is purity, simplicity and form. She worked with porcelain for strength and for its translucent nature, and fired with wood to add a dine ash bloom to glazes. Stewart SCAMBLER Stewart Scrambler is also a woodfirer, making ceramic forms inspired by the Western Australian landscape from local clays and glazes and a mix of native timbers from his York property. Jan Feder was respected by all students for her diligence and technical ability. Her tragic death in 1981 evoked an immediate response from her peers for a memorial. Students discussed a number of memorial options, such as funds for equipment, scholarships and awards. The decision to commence a collection was made based on the idea that all future students could benefit from the availability of a collection, whereas only a very few individuals could benefit from a scholarship. Students immediately set about raising money by selling 'seconds' called 'Junque Sales'. a total of $760.00 was raised and the first two works purchased were by Victor Greenaway and Victoria Howlett. Ceramic works were purchased from visiting lecturers who became leading ceramic artists around the world, as well as from many of the staff who taught at the Gippsland Campus. Ino KIYOSHI (b 1946, Kyoto Japan, d. 2008) Worked in Australia from 1973–76 and 1978–2008 Ino Kiyoshi was to a family that has been involved in the production of pottery for some 160 years. Working in the family studio while studying at the Kyoto School of Arts and Crafts, he completed his diploma of Ceramic Art in 1969. He then attended the KyotoTechnical School for a post-graduate course in glazing. then lectured in ceramics at the KyotoTechnical School. Following in the footsteps of the famous Japanese potter, Shoji Hamada who had visited Australia in 1965, Kiyoshi Ino visited Sydney in 1973, where he worked with Japanese potter Shigeo Shiga). Kiyoshi took up an appointment as Visiting Lecturer in Ceramics at the Gippsland Institute of Technical Education, Churchill, Victoria, from 1974 to 1976 and returned there as Assistant to the Senior Lecturer in Ceramics in 1979. He ceased teaching at the Gippsland Institute in 1988. Ino was involved in the establishment of a space for artists in the old butter factory at the nearby township of Yinnar and in 1982 the Yinnar Art Resource Collective, commonly known as Yinnar ARC, was established. Ino has exhibited extensively throughout Australia. Jan FEDER Born Barmera, South Australia Jan Feder was a student at the Gippsland Centre of Art and Design in the 1980s. She had started studying ceramics in Adelaide, deciding to continue here study at Churchill under Hedley Potts' tutelage after moving to Strezlecki. In her final year Jan was an on-campus weekday resident to save on the travel time. This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection which was amassed with funds raised by Jan Feder's student peers at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design in the mid 1980s after Jan Feder passed away. Although many of the works are donated the intention of the collection was to purchase from visiting lecturers who became leading ceramic artists around the world, as well as from many of the staff who taught at the Churchill Campus.
