A photo of three men, the two in uniform are former junior legatees that were helped to achieve admission to Southampton Naval College UK when they visited Legacy in 1964. These two outstanding junior legatees that were featured in the June 1957 newsletter. The article explains that Ron Rudd was a member of Footscray classes. And John Woodley had lived at Harelands. Both won entry to the greatest school of navigation at Southhampton UK, which lead to successful careers and were welcomed to Legacy luncheons when they were back in Australia. It is possible these two junior legatees had returned to Legacy in 1964 when this photo was taken. The man is the centre is Ivan Layton, Executive Officer of Legacy for 30 years. John Woodley's brother, Arthur, was also looked after by Legacy and in 1990 he wrote of his life and how Legacy helped him in a document (see item 00107).Many junior legatees enlisted in the services in the second World War. Some returned and joined Legacy as Legatees. Black and white photo of the residents at Holmbush. It was one of the residences that was run by Melbourne Legacy for junior legatees. The residences were run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers had been servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. The year is not known but it is approximately 1947, and was in an album which was a collection of photos taken in the 1940s and 1950s. The label with the photo says it was taken by Legatee Harry Rigby. Holmbush at 1267 Burke road, was one of the properties that Legacy used for Junior Legatees. It was purchased 1942. In 1957 Holmbush was renamed Blamey House until it was sold in 1977.It shows that Melbourne Legacy established residences to aid children of deceased servicemen complete their education, take further education and find employment.Black and white photo in an album of the junior legatees at Holmbush.The label is handwritten in blue pen and says "I was at Holmbush when this photo was taken by the late Legatee Harry Rigby c.1947. The newsletter from June 1957. It featured a the Governor of Victoria and his wife with children on a carousel on the cover as there was an article about the Government House Christmas party in 1956. The president's introduction talked about the Commonwealth countries. An article featured two former Junior Legatees that had had success, John Woodley and Ron Rudd. Legacy had advised both boys to obtain entry to the greatest school of navigation in Southampton UK. They were only two Australians selected in 1955. They had recently visited Legacy and spoke at Legacy meetings. A detailed recap of what was happening at Harelands, naming several JLs and what they were up to. Including Helen James, Ken Knape, Garry Thompson, Peter Turton and Bob Neilson. Also Margaret Gregory, and Lillian May. Also what the boys classes were up to by suburb. A photo of the Senior Widows Club Christmas dinner at the Myer Mural Hall. And Operation Float had been a great success when 500 junior legatees were given a great outing by the Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club. Careers in the building industry was part 3 of a series on careers. A newsletter published by Legacy in this format for many years from 1942. It mentions "Issued from time to time for Private Circulation among the Sons and Daughters of Deceased Service men and Merchant Seamen who served their Country during the War of 1914-18, or the present War". Many articles on the work of Legacy, including features on boys classes, girls classes, camps, the residences and where their past residents ended up.
