Black all-over lacquered surfaces decorated with Chinese pavilion scenes and motifs with butterflies. Two inner compartments, upper one fitted with bone/ivory lids to compartments for needlework. Lower compartment is a drawer with missing contents. Two metal carrying handles, two metal key holes (no keys). Front feet gilded wood, back feet wooden blocks. Interior has one removable fitted tray with eleven compartments. Two compartment lids match gold and green lacquerware of exterior. Two have removvable inserts. Third compartment has removable pincushion insert. Four narrow compartments fitted with wooden blocks to contain tools. Hazel, aged 5, was one of 3 little girls who presented a beautiful workbox for Princess Elizabeth to the Duchess of York in 1927. Perhaps this stimulated her interest in the young princesses, although this was typical of young girls of the period. The Australian Bicentennial was held in 1988. The Y's Workbox craft group produced a quilt designed by Mrs Carolyn Marrone as part of the celebrations. The quilt measures 1.41 metres across by 2.52 metres high and represented more than 3000 hours' work by 28 women.It is now mounted on a wall of the Bendigo library.Five Bendigo Advertiser newspaper articles telling the story of the Bendigo Bicentennial quilt. They describe who made them, how they were designed and of their significance. The two-sided cotton patch quilt, together with another 34 quilts from around Australia, formed the message "Australian Bicentennial exhibition 88". This work box belonged to Miss Mary Southcombe who, with her parents Thomas and Mary came from Devon Wales to Portland on the sailing ship "Clara" in 1854. Later that year they settled in Belfast (Port Fairy).
