The iconic bush surrounds of Lake Daylesford are now home to a new permanent artwork titled Cottage, by artist Jason Waterhouse. The artwork has been months in the making, thousands of S-shaped pieces have been hand crafted from three kilometres of wrought iron, then joined together to form a scaled-down miners cottage. ‘Cottage’ is a highly decorative wrought iron sculpture inspired by the gates at the Convent in Daylesford, “ said Waterhouse. “This work references the rich opulence of the Victorian gold rush and pre-war spa resort era in its patterning. In its form ‘cottage’ pays homage to the miners, workers and farmers on whose backs the riches of Daylesford were built.” Cottage is the first in a series of significant public artworks to be commissioned by Hepburn Shire Council. Cottage will enhance one of Victoria’s premier tourist destinations, Lake Daylesford. Five page handwritten letter on light brown or fawn lined paper within a brown envelope within Reg. Item 2488, page 105. The envelope has been glued to the back cover of the book and is address to "Mr. James Inspector / Electric Supply". Seven overseas stamps have been stuck to the envelope. The letter dated 11/10/1937 from an unknown person who lived at 305 Eyre St Ballarat, not signed, outlines the building the horse tram depot in Wendouree Parade. The person put in a quote as the plumber. Notes various aspects of working on the site, materials, difficulties, Thompson and Moore of the Adelaide as the contractors, number of people on the job, problems with the construction, wind damage, building the workers cottages, their rooves and the cash boxes for the conductors. Stonleigh is one of Wodonga’s earliest buildings and stands on land granted to Daniel Rhodes in 1854, in one of the first land sales conducted in Wodonga. The building commenced soon after with the stone walls being 18 inches (46cm) thick. It was a four-room granite rubble stone building with central door and a window on either side, with a separate kitchen, as was typical of the worker's cottage of the day. The original roof would have been shingles but it was replaced with corrugated iron. It passed through several owners including Paul Huon in 1858. Peter Tenner, a farmer and vigneron took over in 1866 when it was described as “built of stone and having a cellar and a detached kitchen plus outside toilet, and a shed or two.” In the late 1880’s it was owned by William Smith who had come to Wodonga as a missionary for the Presbyterian Church and who, together with John Whan, storekeeper, was instrumental in building the Presbyterian Church nearby. Between 1890 and 1910 further buildings were added, consisting of double brick walls, two bedrooms, kitchen, laundry with brick and copper, bathroom and side verandah. William Smith established Wodonga Cordage Works in the Stonleigh buildings. The front room of the house was the display room for the business which manufactured and sold fishing lines, various types of cordage and water bags, the latter being of hand-sewn canvas. After 1954 Stonleigh became a bottle depot and bottle museum under ownership of Ramon Porta. At one stage he had over 50,000 bottles on display. In 1991 it was purchased by Mark Fraser, a cabinet maker, who made extensive renovations at the rear of the premises and internally, but left the façade untouched. Over recent times, Stonleigh was the home of several business including a florist, a patchwork maker and a café. This book was a prize awarded to Miss Middleton, a pupil at Ormiston House College, East Melbourne in 1887. The Principals of the school were the Misses Singleton and their father, Dr John Singleton was a practising doctor in Warrnambool from 1860 to 1865. He had an important influence on Warrnambool, establishing several Total Abstinence Societies and campaigning for improved health conditions for pastoral workers in the district and the aborigines at Framlingham. In Melbourne Dr Singleton and his wife worked tirelessly for the underprivileged. He established many institutions for the less fortunate, including the Prisoners’ Aid Society, the Children’s Hospital, lending libraries, cottages for widows, shelters for homeless men and women, a society for the protection of animals and the Collingwood Free Medical Dispensary. He died in 1891 at Ormiston House, his daughters’ school and home. It is not known which of the Singleton daughters ran the school and no information has been found on Miss Middleton. This book is of considerable interest as it has a close connection to Dr John Singleton, important not only in the social history of Melbourne but also in the history of Warrnambool. This is a hard cover book of 160 pages with 16 pages at the back of the book of advertisements for other books published by the Religious Tract Society. The cover is brown with a sketch of a young man and lettering in gold and an ornamental floral pattern on the front cover. The gold lettering and the ornamental floral pattern are also on the spine. The book has 13 chapters with ornamental scrolls and initials at the beginning and end of each chapter. There are also some full page black and white sketches in the book, with the one at the front of the book covered by a piece of tissue paper. The book plate at the front of the book is white with a gold border pasted onto the page and handwritten details have been added in black ink.
