Ballarat Shool of Mines played an important role in training returned World War One servicemen via the Repatriation Vocational Training Scheme. Operating from 1917 to 1922, this scheme offered trades-based training to a large number of returned soldiers, depending on aptitude and level of disability. Many returned soldiers were unprepared for the workforce after demobilisation because of war injuries, or lost study opportunity during the years of their service. The Scheme was designed to give ex-servicemen the skills to find jobs, boost post-war economic recovery and add to social cohesion. It operated from 1917 to 1922. After his experience in designing moderately priced furniture in the 1930s and managing the construction of aircraft by an inexperienced workforce during World War II, designer Frederick Ward developed Patterncraft paper patterns. They were available by mail order through Australian Home Beautiful from 1947. For those with rudimentary skills Ward developed Timber-pack kits of components ready to glue and assemble. Blueprint, his subsequent project for the mass-market was launched in 1951. At a time of austerity and shortages, Blueprint patters helped Australians furnish their modest homes with modern furniture they had made themselves. Button distributed to and worn by Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) members. The ANF has been campaigning for more funding and qualified nurses to improve the quality of aged care for the past several decades, and continues to do so. The 'Aged care nurses worth more not less' campaign was run throughout 2005-2006 during private aged care enterprise bargaining negotiations. Claims focused on unsafe staffing levels and an inadequate skill mix of registered and unregistered staff. The Royal Australian Nursing Federation became the Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) in 1989, and then became the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation in 2013, suggesting this badge is from the 1990s or early 2000s.Circular pink and black plastic badge. Button distributed to and worn by Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) members during the bargaining process for Victorian nurses' wages and conditions in 2007. Enterprise bargaining is the process of negotiation generally between the employer and employees (often represented by a trade union, professional association or other bargaining representative) with the goal of making an enterprise agreement stipulating the wages and conditions of work. The 2007 public sector campaign entitled 'Fund nursing properly for a better state of health' involved the ANF bargaining for members employed in the public acute and aged care sector, public psychiatric services, the Australian Red Cross Blood Service and the Royal District Nursing Service. The 2007 campaign focused on improved workloads and skill mix and a minimum 18 per cent wage increase to address the wage disparity between Victorian nurses and nurses working in other Australian states.Circular red, white and blue plastic badge. W.L. Allen Foundry on Hulett Street, Albion, was one of the small yet influential industrial enterprises that helped shape the manufacturing character of Sunshine and Albion throughout the second half of the twentieth century. The company was established in 1939 on the corner of Napier Street and Moreland Road, Footscray. Specialising in iron and steel castings, the foundry supplied components for a wide range of industrial and engineering applications. In late 1964, the company relocated to its purpose-built premises in Hulett Street, Albion. From this site, W.L. Allen Foundry became an industry leader, pioneering the adoption of electric melting technology and spectrometric control systems for the analysis and composition of metals. By 1985, the company had achieved international recognition as a world leader in the reclamation of chemically bonded foundry sand. Pictured from left to right are John Noade, Foreman with 34 years of service; Ian Corby, Jobbing Moulder with 26 years of service; and Frank Falukozi, Furnaceman with 31 years of service. Their long careers reflect the skill, dedication and continuity of the workforce that contributed to the success and reputation of W.L. Allen Foundry.W. L. Allen Foundry is significant for its association with the industrial development of Albion and Sunshine during the twentieth century. Established in 1939, the foundry was part of the manufacturing sector that provided employment and contributed to the economic growth of Melbourne's western suburbs. Photographs of the foundry and its workforce document the skilled labour, industrial processes and everyday working lives that underpinned the region's manufacturing heritage. Employee photographs are historically important because they preserve the human side of industrial and workplace history, the people, identities, and everyday lives behind the factories, workshops, and organisations that shaped a community.6819.01 - W.L.
