These brooches were made by Hans Beck, a German Templer who was born and lived in Palestine. When WWII broke out, he was sent to Australia on the "Queen Elizabeth" in 1941 and interned in Tatura Camp 3. His wife and children were left behind in Palestine. His daughter Ingrid said that although they were behind barbed wire, they were safe. Hans worked as a manufacturing jeweler in Sydney after his release from Internment. More than 1000 women veterans of World War II were welcomed by the Prime Minister in the Great Hall of Parliament House. Among them was Rita Kneebone, who had served with the Voluntary Aid Detachments (VAD) on Labuan Island, Borneo. Also among them was Jean Syres and Mary Canty, who between them, served with the VAD in Palestine, Syria, Egypt and Papua New Guinea. Giving the address on behalf of all female veterans was May Douglas, the only surviving director of women's army services, served in Australia and Papua New Guinea. Hand operated sewing machine made in Germany in the late nineteenth century. Mrs Weiss, a young Templer Lutheran living in Palestine, owned it and took it with her to Heluan, Egypt, where Germans in this region were interned during WWI. Her permission to take it was dependent on her sharing the machine with other internees. When the Templers in Palestine were interned in WWII, the sewing machine accompained Mrs Weiss and her family to Tatura in 1941 on the condition that other imternees would also use it. After the war it was taken to South Australia where its use by Mrs Weiss continued until they replaced it with an electric machine.Wooden case/cover for hand operated sewing machine. British aluminum mess tins were used by most of the Empire early in the war. A new pattern of mess tin was developed for the Web Equipment 1937 Pattern, which was a nested, two-piece rectangular mess tin with long, folding handles. Mess tins were used to prepare or heat food but they were also used as a container from which to eat and drink. The tins were lightweight and sturdy but they became hot very quickly when heated. Mess kit consisting of two pieces: One rectangular aluminium mess tin from WWII with multiple hand-carved inscriptions on outside indicating owner and locations he was stationed in 1940 and 1941. Welded handle attachment, although handle itself is missing. This chess set was carved from local wood with bases made from halved cotton reels. The chess pieces take the shape of Australian animals, and Aboriginal men and women. The set was presented to Mr. Benzion Patkin, Honorary Secretary of the Zionist Federation of Australia, by Tatura internees in recognition of his assistance, in particular, his assistance in facilitating the emigration to Palestine. When talking about World War II, Sisters Gay Mole and Jean Crameri both recall tent hospitals, epidemics, bombs and nursing without hot water and electricity. They also recall hard work, comradeship and bravery. The two women were among the3000 nurses who formed the Australian General Hospital (AGH) during the war. Sister Jean Crameri was working at the Royal Women's Hospital when she volunteered and joined the 2/9th unit of the AGH. She served in the Middle East, nursed survivors of the Kokoda Trail and saw the Commander-in-Chief if the Australian Army, Field Marshall Blamey declare peace in the South West Pacific. Sister Gay Mole was in the Nurses Army Reserve in 1939 in the 2/9th unit, with her war service starting her in Puckapunyal then on to the Middle East. After a several months on Ceylon she was back in Australia before sailing to the Pacific, where she was among the first medical staff into Changi Prison. Sister Elizabeth Burchill's latest book on Australian nursing is a revelation of history and anecdotes. 'Australian nurses since Nightingale:1860 -1990' traces the origins of modern nursing to the present time. Sister Burchill, who graduates next year from Monash with a masters degree, was honoured by the university in 1986 with the establishment of the Elizabeth Burchill Room in the Main library at Clayton. Sister Burchill started her caeer in the early 1930's, nursing in outback Australian towns such as Innaminka, served with an ambulance unit during the Spanish civil war in 1937, served in the Second World War in Egypt and Palestine and established the first full-time infant welfare clinic in Darwin since the war. The news story is about the recollections of Miss Jean Hardham, as she attended the a reunion of war nurses at ANZAC House, Melbourne. Former Williamstown Hospital matron and Army nurse, Jean said that although the hardships and horrors of the battlefields in the Middle East are almost as vivid today as when they actually happened forty-four years ago, she would go through the experience again if she lived her life over. Jean had never wanted to do anything other than nurse, so she left Australia in 1940 as a member of the Ambulance Sea Transport Unit of a ship carrying 15,000 soldiers to the battlefields of Palestine and Egypt. 1941 saw her headed to Asia, fleeing the Japanese during the fall of Singapore. After the war, Jean worked at various Victoria hospitals and tutured at the Darley Army training camp. Her nursing career ended at the Williamstown Hospital, where she was matron until her retirement in 1971. Now 90, Elizabeth Burchill has done marvelous things in her life. She nursed in Innaminka, London and helped refugees during the Spanish Civil war. She saw Nazareth when serving with the Sixth Division in Palestine, ran an infant welfare clinic in Darwin, nursed in New Guinea's Sepik district, on Thursday Island, in Labrador, Newfoundland. Betty Duval (now Cornford) decided to sign up with Australia's Defence Forces in February 1941 to have an adventure. Four weeks later she was off to Victoria Dock with all the nurses to head overseas, destination unknown. Betty was onboard the RMS Mauretania, one of the convoy with the HMS Hobart, HM Queen Mary, RMS Aquitania, and SS New (Nieuw) Amsterdam, and a naval escort ship. Soon after leaving Perth the Queen Mary split off for Malaya. Of the sixty-five nursing sisters on board, only twenty-four would ever return to Australia alive. Betty and the RMS Mauretania arrived in Bombay. During the next fourteen months the nurses of the 2/9th Australian General Hospital (AGH) manned hospitals in Palestine and Egypt, depending entirely on the war and troop movements. Early 1942 saw Prime Minister John Curtain order the 6th and 7th Australian divisions withdraw from the Middle East. Betty boarded the [SS Strathallan], again with destination unknown. Arriving home in Melbourne saw Betty move on to nursing in Adelaide until her unit was to be sent to New Guinea for fifteen months.
