The carte de visite is a portrait of five members of the Beechworth Mining District. The Beechworth Mining District was one of 6 mining districts established by the Governor-in-Council in 1858. Gold was first discovered at Spring Creek, Beechworth in February 1852. The primary technique used in sourcing the gold was hydraulic sluicing and dredging. The search for gold is ingrained into the history of Victoria and therefore this image portraying members of the Beechworth Mining District conveys the historical and social significance of mining in the Beechworth region.
